D hits a hiza gatame/knee armlock. The focus this month is armbars from all positions, and hiza is an excellent backup for attacking either arm from bottom guard. It makes an especially nice backup for a lost straight armbar. We split our time on the mat 50/50 between newaza/ground work and standup- Judo is a very well rounded grappling art, being as well rounded as possible is our goal.

Last month the Judo class worked on applying standup and newaza skills against the pressure of a striking opponent. This changes the game significantly, but the fundamentals still work just the same- keep the attacker’s hands occupied, disrupt their balance and finish in a dominant position. This is where Judo’s more aggressively paced approach to ground work really shines. Training against striking is an excellent thing to do once or twice a year of self defense is part of your club’s mission statement.

It’s FIGHT WEEK.
This Saturday(4/18), our very own Fernando Otzoy will be traveling to Bristol to make his amateur kickboxing debut at Champion Striking and Fitness in their upcoming K-1 Tournament.
If you see him in the gym this week, make sure to take a second to wish him luck and if you’re free Saturday, come on out and support him from the sidelines. We are incredibly proud of the work he’s put in through this training camp and can’t wait to see him compete for the first time.
