JMU Computer Science The official page of James Madison University Computer Science Department

The Computer Science Program at James Madison University puts students in the middle of the exploding information revolution where they study technological advances such as object-oriented software, communication networks, multimedia systems, information security, and artificial intelligence. Students learn about computing technologies used by today's professionals and how to use these technologies to solve real-world problems. They learn to analyze problems, design solutions, implement solutions using multiple computing technologies, test and install those solutions, and communicate those solutions to others in written and verbal presentations.

Join us tomorrow, September 18 at 11:25 am for a research talk by Dr. Kirkpatrick!

Abstract: Science only works for society if people can trust it. What happens to that trust if someone publishes a paper with fake data? What if journal editors automatically accept research if you pay them? What if peer reviewers just ask ChatGPT how to write the review? Systems built on trust have a lot of opportunities to be attacked, and the goal of research integrity is to protect the best parts of science from these threats.

Since 2017, Dr. Kirkpatrick has served in a variety of research integrity roles for ACM, the world’s largest professional society for computer science. This talk will give a broad overview of the landscape of research and publication misconduct, including (anonymized) exemplars of violations. It will also describe efforts to combat these problems and what we can all do to help out. Whether you’re a faculty member with years of research experience or an undergraduate hoping to get started—or even if you just like hearing about bad things people do—this talk is for you.

Congratulations to the students in CS 456: Computer Architecture on completing their poster projects exploring topics in processor architecture design! Over the past few weeks, students researched and presented a wide range of subjects from throughout the semester, including dynamic branch prediction, virtual machines, pipelining techniques, GPU design, and other special topics in computer architecture. Great work everyone!

We are happy to honor the remarkable career of Dr. David Bernstein as he begins his well‑earned retirement!!

We asked Dr. Bernstein: What has been your favorite course to teach at JMU, and why?
"My favorite course to teach has been CS240, because the material is so fundamental and it helps students realize that programming requires both knowledge and thoughtfulness."

You will be sincerely missed, bernstdh! Congratulations! 🐥💜

We are happy to honor the remarkable career of Dr. Sharon Simmons as she begins her well‑earned retirement!!
We asked Dr. Simmons: What has been your favorite course to teach at JMU, and why?
"I've enjoyed all the classes I taught for different reasons. From the classes I have taught recently, CS261 is one of my favorites. Students have been accepted into the major and have a foundation in programming. With this background, we are able to explore the details of how the underlying computing system works. Although some students regard the class as challenging, I also see students excited to understand how software interacts with hardware. I find CS261 particularly rewarding when students ask questions about software performance, and when they realize this knowledge helps them to be better software engineers."

One piece of advice to her students: "Have fun exploring how computers work, whether software or hardware, or both 🙂"

You will be sincerely missed, Dr. Simmons! Congratulations! 🐥💜
