For Honors student Mikayla Dolina, excellence isn't limited to the classroom. She recently won first place in her class at the United States Powerlifting Association Ultra Nationals, and broke not just one, but three world records.

With a total lift of 423 kg, she broke the junior world record by 23 kg, and also set new world records in both the squat and deadlift. Her performance notably exceeded the weights she had achieved in training: “The competition atmosphere and excitement give me extra strength and push me to do my best,” Dolina said, reflecting on her experience.

At JMU, Dolina is majoring in psychology with a minor in Honors Interdisciplinary Studies. She chose to join the Honors College because she wanted to be part of a community with a deeper focus on academics: “I strive to be my best, and Honors felt like an opportunity to pursue that in my coursework.”

She is also a member of Girl Gains, a student organization focused on women’s strength training, and will be working as a UREC fitness assistant in the fall. Furthering her dedication to the sport, Dolina hopes to establish a collegiate powerlifting team on campus.

Honors students are making their mark both in and out of the classroom. Just as the excitement of competition motivates Dolina to reach new heights, the interdisciplinary community of Honors creates an environment where students can support each other’s growth. We can’t wait to keep cheering Mikayla on!
