The City of Harrisonburg will begin a major construction project along Port Republic Road between Bradley Drive and Bluestone Drive on September 8, 2026. Work is expected to continue for approximately two years, with construction activities scheduled on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
While pedestrian access will be maintained, drivers should expect periodic lane reductions, including times when traffic is reduced to a single lane. These impacts may also affect travel times on bus routes, particularly the Black, Green, and Pink Lines.
Tomorrow's work will focus on placing barriers, but more significant construction activity is expected in the coming weeks.
We know traffic delays can be frustrating. One thing that helps keep everyone moving is choosing transit when possible. Every seat filled on a bus can mean fewer cars in the construction zone, helping reduce congestion for everyone who needs to travel through the area.
On Labor Day, we're reminded of the many people whose work keeps Harrisonburg moving. As this project gets underway, we recognize the construction workers building future improvements along the corridor and the transit operators who continue serving passengers through changing traffic conditions. While construction will create short-term disruptions, the project is intended to improve how people move through this area in the future, whether they're walking, biking, riding transit, or driving.
