On Second Thought 💭

When my son was in elementary school, his homeroom teacher was a very experienced teacher in his early sixties, Mr. Chobei.
At the first parent meeting, he said something that I still remember clearly.
“Please listen carefully to what your precious children tell you. But please don’t take everything they say as 100 percent of the whole story.”
At the time, I was still a young mother, and I thought he seemed a little strict.
But over the course of that year, my impression changed completely. He truly paid attention to each child. He could be firm when needed, but underneath that firmness was a great deal of care and affection. Before long, both my son and I had grown very fond of him.
Now, I understand his words much more deeply.
When a child says, “I was sad” or “I didn’t like what happened,” the first thing we should do is listen carefully. That is very important.
At the same time, what a child sees or feels in one moment may not always represent everything that happened. This is especially true in a new environment, when using an unfamiliar language, or when feeling pressure from an exam. Words can sometimes sound stronger than they were intended, and situations can be understood differently from how they were meant.
A teacher’s sigh can hurt a child, while a simple smile can lift that same child up.
That is why, when misunderstandings or miscommunication happen, I believe it is important not to reach a conclusion based only on that first impression. Sometimes we need to stop and ask, “What really happened?”
“What did that mean?”
“Did I understand it the way it was intended?”
Taking time to think, ask questions, and clarify is an important part of learning.
It is not only about English. It is a skill we need in order to communicate and build relationships with others.
Experiences like these can also help build resilience — the ability to think things through, recover from difficulties or misunderstandings, and keep moving forward.
Now that I work in education myself, Mr. Chobei’s words mean even more to me than they did then.
He was not telling parents to doubt their children. I believe he was telling us to value our children’s feelings, while also helping them pause, think, and understand the fuller picture.
