This morning, Joe suddenly passed away.
As usual, we went for our morning walk, he ate his breakfast, enjoyed his treats, and happily ran around. Everything seemed perfectly normal. It all happened so suddenly that it still doesn't feel real.
As I was getting ready to leave to teach my classes, Joe came over to me and lay down by my side. Suddenly, his breathing became labored. Before I could fully comprehend that something was terribly wrong, he began to lose consciousness.
I immediately canceled my lessons (my sincere apologies to all of my students who were inconvenienced by the sudden cancellation) and rushed him to the emergency veterinary hospital, but they were unable to save him.
The veterinarian told us that a tumor inside his body had most likely ruptured, causing massive internal bleeding. We were also told that even if the tumor had been discovered earlier and surgically removed, it probably would not have saved his life.
Joe came into our lives in April 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The animal shelter asked us if we could foster him because they had to close the shelter. From that day on, for six years and three months, Joe brought immense love, comfort and happiness not only to our family, but also to every student at Takara Gakuin.
He was kind not only to people, but to every animal he encountered—dogs, cats, foxes, and every other creature in the neighborhood. He was gentle, funny, adorably goofy, and truly the sweetest boy.
Thank you, Joe, for all the love and joy you gave us. I hope that one day you'll be reborn and find your way back to us. We'll be waiting for you.
