This is huge news for our FFEL borrowers!

If you have FFEL loans and have worked for a non-profit while making on time student loan payments, you previously did not qualify for PSLF because of the type of your loan. Now, the Department of Ed is giving borrowers one year to consolidate their loans (while keeping their loan history, which is huge) into Direct Consolidation loans and counting past and future qualifying payments towards PSLF.

If this applies to you, the Department of Ed has said they will be reaching out to borrowers to let them know of this change. But it is always best to be proactive and start going to past employers to get that paperwork taken care of. You don’t want to miss out on potential forgiveness!

The Biden administration plans to overhaul the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, which could help roughly 550,000 loan borrowers.
