It was another busy week in Discovery classes as we continue our Social Studies focus on American geography. Third and fourth grade students learned state abbreviations and used them to label states on dry erase maps. After taking a “virtual field trip” around the country to see some famous landmarks like the Space Needle, Cloud Gate, Gateway Arch, and more, they sculpted miniature versions out of Play Doh and added them to their maps.

Second grade used the maps as well to identify our state, nation’s capital, important bodies of water, and more.

In first grade, we focused on the difference between a country and a state. They learned a fun fact about each state, and then put together a puzzle of the USA. 🇺🇸

Below are pictures from Mrs. Eubanks’, Mrs. Luker’s, Mrs. Harp’s, and Mrs. Brightwell’s class.

We can’t wait to celebrate America’s 250th birthday at Skyline Heights on November 12th!

Our fourth grade GT students had an incredible day of learning at the Arkansas State Capitol! 🏛️🇺🇸

Students toured the Capitol grounds, including the Little Rock Nine Memorial and a replica of the Liberty Bell, enjoyed lunch at the Natural State Café, and experienced a fantastic tour of the Capitol led by Cheryl Augustine. They visited the Arkansas Supreme Court and the chambers of the House of Representatives, and at the Treasury, each student even had the chance to hold $100,000 in cash! 💵💵💵 We even met three lawmakers along our tour!

This field trip brought what students have been learning in class to life and gave them meaningful, real-world connections to Arkansas government, history, and civics. What a fantastic day of learning and discovery!

To kick off our hydroponics unit, 7th grade enrichment students toured UA Northark’s greenhouses. We learned from Michelle Buchanan and Lindsey Booth, who taught us more about growing plants without soil! We gathered tons of information and even got to taste-test some of their beautiful plants! 🌱

Yesterday, Harrison Arkansas Middle School’s 7th Grade Quiz Bowl Team competed in Mountain View at the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Generation Conservation Regional Qualifier. They lost to Flippin in the semi-finals, who went on to accomplish a first-place finish! In between games, students took a step back in history at the Folk Center!

It was a beautiful day for learning and growing! Thanks, Mrs. O’Dell, for hosting, and Mr. Brewer for serving as judge. Congrats to the Flippin team!

🎈✈️ The fifth-grade aviation unit is taking flight!

After hearing about hot air balloons from Shelby Waters, we were inspired to design our own balloon trading cards. Students have been exploring aviation through creativity, science, and engineering.

They took their designs from 2-D to 3-D, building their own balloon models (Thanks, Reagan, for the idea)! We also experimented with the science of spinning and flight through a hands-on heat activity.

Way to go, Judah, Bella, and Colton! 👏🏼♟️
