Dr. Kaushik Luthra and Laura Starkus from the AG-PRO (Arkansas Grain PROcessing) Lab are collaborating with USDA researchers Dr. Dan Brabec and Dr. Deanna Scheff, Arkansas State University’s Dr. Tanja McKay, and local industry partners to evaluate Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, including fumigation, residual sprays, and insecticide-treated bagging, to reduce rice losses during post-harvest storage and transport.
This work supports Arkansas’ rice industry by helping protect grain quality and market value after harvest. Especially during extended periods of storage, pest management is key to avoid grain spoilage. Special thanks to Dr. Tim Burcham, director of the Northeast Rice Research and Extension Center, for hosting our guests and providing a facility tour.

Exciting two weeks at the AG PRO Lab at NERREC.

We were grateful to host visitors from RiceTec, Anheuser Busch, Garten Automation from Brazil, and University of Arkansas Provost Dr. Indrajeet Chaubey, who visited our lab during the Board of Trustees meeting at NERREC.

We also visited the Livestock and Forestry Research Station in Batesville to discuss collaboration with Dr. Jason Davis and his team.

These visits led to meaningful discussions, clear action points, and a shared focus on helping the Arkansas rice and grain industry through research, extension, collaboration, and timely results dissemination.

The Arkansas grain industry, especially rice, needs urgent support. At AG PRO Lab, we are committed to working with anyone who brings skills, resources, and the shared goal of helping Arkansas growers and stakeholders.

The 2026 State and National Awards Reception, held on April 20, 2026, celebrated outstanding achievements across the University of Arkansas community, recognizing both student and mentor excellence.

Dr. Kaushik Luthra was honored with the Outstanding Mentor Award, while his graduate student, Josiah Ojeniran, was named Outstanding Scholar in recognition of multiple awards earned over the past year. Dr. Terry Howell, Chair of the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, also received a Mentor Award. The event was hosted by Provost Dr. Indrajeet Chaubey, who delivered the welcome address and presented the awards.

While such accolades are not the primary motivation, this recognition serves as a meaningful encouragement to continue making impactful contributions in service to farmers and stakeholders.

Dr. Kaushik Luthra at the AG-PRO lab, located at the Northeast Rice Research & Extension Center, hosted Dr. Argelia Lorence of Arkansas State University. They are joining forces to bridge the gap between field-level crop resilience and post-harvest grain quality.

The partnership leverages two distinct but highly complementary scientific areas:
1. Stress-Resilient Breeding: Dr. Argelia Lorence, Director of the A-State Phenomics Facility, focuses on identifying rice varieties that can withstand extreme heat and climate stress. Her work often targets specific traits, such as vitamin C's role in plant health and genes that protect yields during high nighttime temperatures.
2. Post-harvest Processing: Dr. Kaushik Luthra, an Assistant Professor and Extension Engineer based at the Northeast Rice Research and Extension Center (NERREC), specializes in grain drying, handling, and storage. His research aims to use computational modeling to maximize farm profitability by preventing quality loss and look for use of Arkansas grains based on specific quality traits for novel markets.

This effort aligns with one of the five core values of University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture (UADA) i.e. Collaboration.

As the Principal Investigator at AG-PRO Lab, Dr. Luthra understands the problem that Arkansas agriculture and grain industry is facing needs researchers and stakeholders to come on board and work together holistically to resolve issues like rice milling yield reduction, low value, and losing export market.
