Harrisburg R-VIII School District Announces Superintendent Retirement

At its October 12, 2026, meeting, the Harrisburg R-VIII Board of Education was formally notified that Superintendent Steve Combs plans to retire at the end of the 2026–2027 school year, effective June 30, 2027.

Mr. Combs will conclude his 32-year career in education, including a long history of service to the Harrisburg School District dating back to 1999.

In announcing his retirement, Mr. Combs shared the following:

“Harrisburg has always been more than just a place to work for me. It has been my home, a place where I raised my family, built lifelong friendships, and had the privilege of working alongside some truly outstanding people. I want to sincerely thank the Harrisburg community, our incredible faculty and staff, and the current and former members of our Board of Education for their support, trust, and friendship over the years.

They say you can never go home again, but I have been fortunate enough to prove that saying wrong. Serving this district has been the opportunity of a lifetime, and I will always be proud to be a Harrisburg Bulldog.”

Mr. Combs will continue serving as superintendent through the remainder of the school year, remaining focused on students, staff, and the district's continued success.

The Harrisburg R-VIII Board of Education will begin the search for the district's next superintendent. Additional information about the search and selection process will be shared as it becomes available.

Congratulations to the 2026 Harrisburg Lady Bulldogs Softball Team on setting a new school record for the most wins in a single season with 29 victories!

The Lady Bulldogs have put together a remarkable regular season and look to carry that success into district play this week!
