The team who created the Boating Safety Sidekicks in 1999 for the National Safe Boating Council, created the NatureLink Family and a 64-page companion activity book for the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) in 1996. More than 100.000 books were printed and distributed to kids worldwide through a grant from Canon. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of this publication, we’ll be posting consecutive pages from the activity book each weekend, in addition to our regular safe boating content.

Fishing Knots: Knots You Need to Know
Fishing knots can be your weakest or strongest link when reeling in your catch. An improperly tied knot can weaken a fishing line by 50%. A properly tied knot, such as the three shown here, can keep up to 90% of the fishing line’s strength. This is Fishing Flipchart #9 from the Boating Safety Sidekicks.

If your boat capsizes, you are in the water.
In a small boat, don’t allow anyone to lean a shoulder beyond the gunwale (edge) and keep your center of gravity low by not allowing passengers to stand up or move around while underway. And, ALWAYS be prepared if your boat capsizes or you fall in the water by ALWAYS wearing your life jacket while boating. WEAR IT!
