Today marks my 15th anniversary of opening my own in-home Daycare! Although I’ve been in childcare for 27+ years, running my own in-home has been an amazing adventure. Ive had so many amazing families come through my daycare (and a few not so great ones 😒) I can hardly believe it. My daycare has grown in so many ways adding many more life long friends as well as a husband and my own kids 🥰 looking forward to many more years of growing and being an important part of young kids lives and developments! Thank you to all my wonderful families that have made this job an amazing journey and a rewarding career!

Truth. My kids are the hardest kids because I’m their mom.

Children often save their most intense emotions for their mothers because they see her as the ultimate “safe base” to release stress and be their unfiltered self, trusting her co-regulation (calming presence) to soothe their nervous system after holding it together elsewhere. Their nervous system literally attunes to the mother’s, and showing big emotions is a sign of deep trust, not defiance, indicating they feel secure enough to “fall apart”.

🗂️Why This Happens (The Science):

📑Safety & Trust: A child’s nervous system recognizes the mother (or primary caregiver) as the person they can fully trust to handle their big feelings without judgment or threat, allowing them to drop their guard.

📑Co-Regulation: Mothers help calm a child’s distressed nervous system through mirroring (heartbeat, breath) and soothing. This teaches the child self-regulation.

📑Mirroring the Nervous System: A child’s internal state (heart rate, stress hormones) mirrors the parent’s. A mother’s calm presence is medicine or her anxiety can become the child’s “normal”.

📑The “Safe Field Effect”: When a child sees their mother, their brain gets a signal they’re safe to release pent-up emotions from school or other situations.

🗂️What it Looks Like:

📑”Saving the Worst for Last”: They might behave perfectly at school but have meltdowns at home because the tension has to go somewhere.

📑Not Misbehavior, But Release: The tantrum isn’t defiance; it’s the child letting go of stress in the one place they feel secure enough to do so.

🗂️How To Respond:

📑Regulate Yourself First: Your calm is their medicine. Take deep breaths to signal safety.

📑Validate & Connect: Say, “You held a lot in today. It’s okay to let it out now”.

📑Offer Presence, Not Logic: Their logical brain is offline. Offer connection, gentle touch, and calm, not lectures.

Studies also show that when children don’t have this secure attachment to lean on, it negatively rewires the child’s brain. I’ll expand on this more in the comments, out of room here❤️

Very important information

Very important information

Pressuring young children to write before their hands are developmentally ready places unnecessary emotional and physical stress on them.

At age 2, the hand is still mostly cartilage, with soft bones and delicate joints. Tasks like writing aren’t just hard—they’re uncomfortable.

At age 4, ossification has begun, but the small muscles and joints are still developing. Fine motor control is emerging, not mastered.

By 7, the hand is structurally ready for more intentional writing. Bones, joints, and muscle strength now support the dexterity we expect.

By 10, children have the refined motor control needed for complex and sustained writing.

These X-rays make something very clear: development cannot be rushed. When we push young children to write before their bodies are prepared, we see frustration, strained joints, and a hit to self-confidence. A toddler’s scribble holds just as much developmental value as a 6-year-old writing their name—they’re simply on different timelines. Earlier is not better. Research consistently shows that early academic pressure leads to lower long-term academic outcomes, not higher.

So why are toddlers and preschoolers being handed worksheets and expected to write? Why the rush?

This misalignment between expectation and biology is exactly what we’ll be breaking down inside our upcoming webinar, “Rethinking Early Learning: More Than Crafts & Worksheets,” to see what replaces those product-driven tasks and how to bring back the whole-body learning that builds the brain (Nov 26, 2025 12:00 PM EST).
