Our next meeting is Thursday, June 22 at 6:30 PM @ the CHW social hall (601 Washington St)
Harpers Ferry Confluence was born out of a conversation a few of us had years ago. Covid drove us apart in many ways and we wanted to create a venue for people to gather, share ideas and engage in conversation. As many ideas do, this one sat around for quite some time before we finally took any action. We are glad we did.
While there is no shortage of groups, clubs & organizations supporting various causes, we wanted to create a simple gathering where people could share and discuss ideas free from an agenda or greater purpose. It is not a religious or political organization. There are myriad opportunities, both online and in-person to debate & discuss topics related to religion and politics. We encourage everyone to do so.
Rather, Harpers Ferry Confluence is an open forum for our members to gather in-person and share interesting ideas in history, science, technology, literature, music and the arts (and more!) and to engage in conversation.
A confluence is where two rivers meet. Our meeting place in historic Harpers Ferry is where the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers join. It is an apt metaphor.
The structure is loosely based on Benjamin Franklin's Junto club and the Inklings (A writers club that J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis belonged to). Franklin's Junto discussed Natural Philosophy ("Science" today) and politics (which we try to avoid). the Inklings bounced ideas off of each other for the novels and stories they were working on.
We meet once a month and have a speaker present a topic of their choosing and we discuss it afterwards. Simple.
All are welcome. (It is not necessary to RSVP but please send a note to [email protected] if you are planning to join us just so we know how many people to expect)
