I looking forward to another month of fantastic book discussions. I will be digging out my copy of Assata, which records show that I purchased in 2009. It’s been waiting on me to get back to it. I have a habit of saving books for the right moment. This is the right moment. It has been calling to me for a couple of months. I am physical book, audiobook, and ebook ready! I started The Island of Missing Trees last Spring, and set it down.

You ever start a book and think, I don’t want to read this one alone? I did however, spend a lot of time on YouTube learning about the history of Cyprus. Beautiful writing. I remember posting somewhere that I think I have a new favorite to add to my list of Gloria Naylor and Isabelle Allende.

We kick things off with some history, young-woman dilemma, exploration, becoming, and much-needed humor.
I say this every month, because we select great books, but I am really looking forward to these reads. And I especially need to start with some laughs because, as much as I LOVE Arundhati Roy and her writing, that damn The God of Small Things… Whew!

It’s a must read, though!

I am reading The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy.

One of the things it reminded me this morning is that the harsh words we speak out of our own pain, especially to children—our own children can have lifelong, devastating impact and irreversible consequences.

I think a lot of Le***ans read, watch, and listen to “Le***an” content and feel unseen, that little of what is popular Le***an culture relates to who they are, how they “label” or don’t “label” themselves, think, or live their lives.

It can be difficult to find community, but I LOVE the that we get to choose - all of it - and create our own communities, carve out our own lanes - remain authentic to ourselves. This is especially true for those of us in Western countries.

We can be our own molds.

I scrolled through a lot of old posts today. I saw names that have been around these parts for a long time, including men. You know when you run a Le***an page, you expect trolls and inappropriate messages from men, especially when it's a BLACK Le***an page, that type of vile harassment is multiplied.

BLC has been here for 14 years, and I have gotten my fair share of such messages, but honestly, not as many as I expected, and the men's whose names came up repeatedly today, have never been intrusive or disrespectful.

So on this Friday night, I want to show my appreciation to the men who have maintain proper boundaries while quietly and respectfully supporting this public Black Le***an space!
