Nitaazhitoojik Industrial Training Program
Student Feature: Giizhig Martell

Giizhig Martell, son of Saginaw Chippewa Tribe citizen Carrie Heron & Grand Traverse Band citizen Raymond Martell, and grandson of Little Traverse Bay Bands citizen Jane Martell and Grand Traverse Band citizen Howard Martell, was selected for a one-week pre-apprenticeship opportunity with Bay Shore Steel Works, a subsidiary of Grand Traverse Economic Development. The experience followed Giizhig’s participation in the 6-week Work-Based Learning Program through the Industrial Arts Institute where he secured an American Welding Society certification in FCAW 3G & 4G. Mr. Martell comes from a long line of welders so it was no surprise that Giizhig successfully completed a one-week shadow experience with aspirations of continuing his welding education after high school. “I like welding because it’s hands on work and you are creating useful things that will be used by people. I always struggled in school but welding comes easy and I just get it. Thank you for the opportunity to learn, Nitaazhitoojik Industrial Training and Bay Shore Steel Works.” Bay Shore Steel Works enjoyed their time mentoring Mr. Martell and welcomes the opportunity of Giizhig coming back after his graduation. Great work, Giizhig!
