Our fifth graders are swimming deep into their salmon studies! 🐟 Today, two representatives from the Portland Water Bureau visited to teach students about our local water system and how it affects salmon populations. Students even played a fun game to experience the challenges salmon face!

🌍✈️ Tuesday was Passport Club Day! The goal of Passport Club is to build global literacy in a fun, engaging, and lasting way.

Here’s how it works: students receive their own “passport” and choose a map study level. Throughout the month, they can study maps at home with their families. Then, during the monthly passport check, they earn stamps for what they’ve learned about countries and continents!

Thank you, Verne Duncan families! The opening days of school are always a favorite for the NCSD Communications Team. "Hidden Falls" may seem a bit of hyperbole when there is a path paved straight to the park, but there certainly was plenty to see and explore along the way for Mr. Johnson's 5th Grade class.

Students made the most of the trek from the Verne Duncan Elementary campus to view the small waterfall and creek, quaintly tucked away from the bustle of homes and businesses surrounding it.

Even the weather gave the kids a break from the record-breaking temperatures to make for a leisurely and memorable stroll to close out the school year.

She is always willing to find innovative ways to support our students and teachers!”

Michelle Peifer
Michelle is a very active volunteer in my classroom and throughout the building. She is gentle, helpful, and one of the sweetest individuals I've worked with. She's consistently willing to help out with projects and help me get things accomplished. I've also seen her working with kids during Passport Club. She greets each student with a calming smile as she asks them about locations around the world. Also, let's not leave out the fact that she's been a part of our beloved PTO this year. She is an absolute treasure!

Rachael Reese
Rachael is super creative, patient, and she loves helping out with projects in the classroom. She's willing to get things done in the classroom, as well as, take items home to finish up. She's been a huge help this year!

Janelle Calvin
Janelle has taken the time to come into the classroom and offer her help with production and prep. work for projects. She's a hard worker and super kind.

Angelica Cruz
Angelica has used her talents and skills to work with small groups of students on their phonics skills. She's always willing to work with a variety of students, and I know I can always count on her to do a fabulous job. I have truly appreciated her help!

The Dragonflies had a very special visitor today — the one and only Dr. Verne Duncan himself!

At 91 years young, Dr. Duncan stopped by to celebrate with the students at the school that proudly bears his name. He met every Dragonfly and even shared some birthday cake! 🍰
