Today, students took a walk at Jacob’s Pond in Norwell to learn about Beech Leaf Disease and practice identifying poison ivy in the field.

Along the trail, we found several beech trees showing symptoms of Beech Leaf Disease and discussed how the disease is affecting beech trees across Massachusetts and the northeast. The disease is caused by a microscopic nematode and over time the disease can weaken trees, reduce growth, and lead to decline.

It’s always great when students can see these topics firsthand instead of just reading about them in the classroom.
