Systems final project symposium:

“Waste to Watts: Considering the impact of bioenergy across different implementation and policy scenarios”

“How EN-ROADS Reveals the True Cost of Carbon: Global warming is not just rising temperatures; it is increasing human death toll”

In this course, students focus on futures of energy as they impact, and are impacted by climate change, the environment, and economic development. The course uses model-based approaches to develop global-scale energy scenarios and to explore the potential evolution of current and potential energy options in both localized and global settings.

PhD student Ya Tang is first author, with Professor Yan Li as co-corresponding author, on a collaborative study with that presents a new 3D-printable formulation of zeolite catalyst that could facilitate turning waste plastic, wood, and food into a viable sustainable energy source.

The study, published in the .Portfolio journal Advanced Manufacturing, presents a method and formulation that not only addresses geometric constraints, but also ensures uniformity of composition and structural integrity throughout the printed catalyst.

"My favorite part was doing the iteration," said Tang. "3D-printing formulas require different binders and powders and processing temperatures, and also mixing techniques. So we tried a lot of things. You never know what's going to happen, but it's always exciting to find something that really works and really can change the world."

Research Scientist Aleah Sommers and PhD candidate Anna Valentine joined Derek Pickell and Mathieu Morlighem from Earth & Planetary Sciences (Dartmouth Earth & Planetary Science) to visit to Ladakh, India, where they collaborated with researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) to study the thickness and dynamics of Himalayan glaciers.

They also participated in the Indian Glaciological Summer School which brought together students from all over India for an intensive two-week course based in Leh, Ladakh.

“Building any international collaboration takes time and trust. The friendships, the challenges, and the science that will come out of combining our areas of expertise are remarkably worthwhile,” said Sommers.

This month, Thayer established its Link (local section) of the Order of the Engineer, which was initiated in 1970 to “foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer.”

We held our first ceremony at which 72 graduating and other eligible engineers were invited to accept a stainless steel ring and the Obligation of the Engineer:

"I am an Engineer. In my profession I take deep pride. To it I owe solemn obligations.

As an Engineer, I pledge to practice integrity and fair dealing, tolerance and respect; and to uphold devotion to the standards and the dignity of my profession, conscious always that my skill carries with it the obligation to serve humanity by making the best use of the Earth’s precious wealth.

As an Engineer, I shall participate in none but honest enterprises. When needed, my skill and knowledge shall be given without reservation for the public good. In the performance of duty and with deep fidelity to my profession, I shall give my utmost."
