On Tuesday, the Business Scholars Program invited us to Collaborate on a discussion on Multiculturalism in the workplace. This discussion brought out the importance for cross-cultural competency not only in the Hanover workplace but in the Hanover community as a whole. Here are some key points for all to have taken:
1. Cross-cultural competency and respect are necessary for us to have good relations with each other in our diverse community. We cannot expect someone to listen to our opinions, beliefs and ideals if we cannot learn to understand and respect theirs in return.
2. Assess how you handle uncomfortable situations. If we do not learn to speak up when we see something disrespectful towards a minority group then we are not playing our role in ensuring the environments we create are comfortable and safe for people of various cultures. Hold people accountable even when it is beyond your comfort zone.
3. One of the panelists mentioned that, "Misunderstandings arise when I use my meanings to make sense of your reality." What do we mean by this? One may think assuming an Arab woman is Muslim is not offensive, but that common misconception may cause the party you're addressing to feel uncomfortable because assumptions on their identity are being made off appearance. Cultural awareness is a pillar of communication and it involves the ability of standing back from ourselves and being open to listen to others before we pass judgement.
4. We need to expand this message to our personal spheres. It is the social responsibility of those who are interested in these issues on campus to spark a similar interest in others. Next time that there is a similar event, bring a friend or introduce the topic over a meal as you would politics! It's a conversation and everyone should be a part of it!
