seeing how social media and artificial intelligence are accelerating the spread of misinformation, specifically in the recent history of his country, Rwanda, Fabrice Niyigaba ’27 set out to design a digital tool that would identify and classify misinformation in Kinyarwanda, the national language of Rwanda’s 15 million people.

the result? KinyaProp, a digital tool that can be used to detect misinformation and harmful content to prevent manipulate and pressure leaders to not mislead people.

what’s more? Niyigaba’s research also lays the groundwork for building these models in other Bantu languages, a family of over 600 languages spoken by 30% of Africans. “KinyaProp [is] foundational in this area,” says Niyigaba.
