Marika Olsen shares:

Ever wanted to ask a seasoned CIA station chief a question about what is happening, why it is happening, and what is possible in Ukraine? (Strategy, politics, on-the-ground military perspectives etc)

On April 14, I'm helping organize a Lunch and Learn at the NYC Yale Club (which is also the Dartmouth Club) with my amazing friend Ralph Goff, who is a six time CIA station chief. He's worked in various parts of the world and had been tapped to be the CIA's Deputy Director of Global Clandestine Operations. (Ralph isn't a Trump loyalist - he works hard to be neutral, following the facts and the law.) He will be joined by my Ukrainian young student friend Tetiana Kotelnykova.

It will be an informal, intimate conversation. Cost to cover lunch fee etc is $50. This is for Dartmouth folks, with a few exceptions. DM me if you want to come. Ralph is now consulting and actively working in Ukraine with top dogs like Petraeus.

NYC Lunch: March 6, 12 pm

Our next lunch will be at Hwa Yuan Szechuan on Friday, March 6 at noon. The restaurant is located at 42 East Broadway in Chinatown. I thought it would be fun to try something new, but can move it uptown if we don't have a quorum. For those of you who check out menus, the restaurant shows their dinner menu on line. Their lunch menu is the same selection but lower prices.

For lunch topic, let’s talk about a new or old activity/hobby that we've taken up recently...or started up again.

Please email Lore Serra at [email protected] if you can attend.

Just added! D83 Discussions: Kimball Halsey: Medicare: March 10 7pm eastern

Everything you always wanted to know about Medicare but were afraid to ask.
As each of us in the Class of 1983 turns 65 (I did so in January), we need to make important decisions about Medicare. You are probably asking yourself some of the following questions:
What does Medicare cover?
How much does it cost?
Should I use an insurance broker or do it on my own?
How do the four parts of Medicare work together?
When do I have to enroll in Medicare?
How does Medicare work with the insurance I’ve already got?
Will I need other insurance?
What can I expect to pay for my healthcare down the line?

At this workshop you will learn:
What Medicare is, who is eligible for it, and how you get it.
How Medicare enrollment periods work – and what you need to do to avoid late-enrollment penalties
The two ways to have Medicare – and how to choose.
What Medicare costs, and how those costs can change based on your household income.
How Medicare works with private insurance to provide comprehensive coverage.
How to start planning for future healthcare costs – including the possibility of needing long-term care.

D83 Discussions: February 4, 7 pm Associate Professor Sean Westwood: "Entrepreneurs of Conflict: A Descriptive Analysis of When and How Political Elites Use Divisive Rhetoric"

Associate Professor in the Department of Government Sean Westwood. studies political behavior and public opinion, examining how partisanship and information from political elites affect the behavior of citizens. His work focuses on understanding where partisan biases originate, where they manifest (inside and outside political domains), and their bounds. We will discuss how the negativity we see from our elected officials is misaligned with what Americans actually want. This disconnect is contributing to polarization--and persists despite (or perhaps because of) the attention it receives online and from traditional media. This is not a political discussion: His findings are entirely non-partisan. Both parties have their share of attention-grabbers and diligent workers. He doesn’t single out individual representatives--the focus is on the overall trend and why it harms democratic discourse.

D '83's Central Park Ice Skate: Feb. 6 - Wohlman Rink - 12 noon- 2:15 pm

You are hereby invited to our February "lunch". We are going ice skating Wohlman Rink in Central Park! 12 noon - 2:15 pm, Friday, Feb. 6th.

Here's the plan: 12 noon – check in just outside the rink to buy your tickets. (The rink is at about 63rd St. near the middle/slightly east in Central Park) Admission is $25. Skate rentals are $16.
12:15 to 115 – ice skate.
1:15 to 2:15 have lunch at the Wohlman Rink snack bar. They have decent sandwiches and wraps and french fries, etc.
(They Zamboni the ice from 1130 to 12 so the ice will be fresh when we start. They do it again at 2:30 PM so it's good to finish up our time there just before the crowd comes off the ice en masse.)

Dust off your skates, or at least your Occum Pond skating legs. Or just shuffle along with us out there! I promise not to orchestrate a whip!

You are hereby invited to our annual Dartmouth '83 Annual Spectacular Holiday Lunch, on Thursday, December 4, 12 PM to 2 PM at the Yale Club in the private Council Room (18th floor).

One of the fun traditions at this lunch is a Yankee Gift Swap. Please bring a gift, $10 to $20 in value, wrapped, which we will exchange – rules to follow. Real or gag gift - either one works great!

Agenda: We will go around the horn – (we are at a large boardroom style table) – and I have three items for everyone this year: 1) We would love you to show a print-out of a photo - anything meaningful to you. 2) What was one good thing about your 2025? And 3) What is something you are looking forward to in 2026?

The price for this buffet lunch is $50, all-inclusive. (If ordering alcohol, that's extra).

I hope you all can make it!

David Ellis
