The Upper Valley Brain Bee

Upper Valley Brain Bee 2020 Update:

After careful consideration, the executive committee has decided to cancel the upcoming Upper Valley Brain Bee and our neuroscience bootcamps due to the dynamic and ongoing situation with the coronavirus (COVID-19). We hope in doing so we will reduce any possible transmission of the virus and thus comply with current CDC and Dartmouth College recommendations for large gatherings. We understand this is will be disappointing for our community, volunteers and, especially, to our competitors. Please continue your studying in preparation for the 2021 Brain Bee, details of which will be coming out in late 2020 or early 2021. Our website (https://uvbrainb.wixsite.com/neuroscience/2020-bee) will remain active and updated for all Brain Bee news as well as resources to help you prepare for the next competition.

We hope to see everyone next year!

UV’s Weekly Brain Fact: The process by which action potentials “jump” from one unmyelinated node of Ranvier to the next node of Ranvier is called saltatory conduction. “Saltatory” comes from the Latin word “saltare” which means to leap. Happy Leap Day!!

UV Brain Bee is starting to share weekly brain facts to get everyone inspired and motivated for the upcoming competition (April 25, 2020)!

This week's brain fact is: 80% of neurons in the brain are excitatory whereas the remaining 20% are inhibitory. Excitatory neurons push their neighbors towards firing, while inhibitory neurons suppress activity and regulate circuit activity (BrainFacts.org)
