Everyone's heard of the Mozart effect, but is it real? Prof. Michael Casey's Music and Affective Sound lab (MASLab) collaborated with the neurology unit at DHMC to analyze electrical brain signals collected while participants listened to music in varied styles. Abnormal neural activity that is specific to epilepsy is suppressed in time with the musical phrasing. Sonata form is good for you, and what other music might also be?

Why Mozart? Dartmouth researchers seek mechanisms for the anti-epileptic properties of Mozart’s K448 as a therapeutic potential for epilepsy.
