I wanted to go to Day 3 of the Due Process Hearing but I guess pets aren’t allowed in the Worcester Courthouse. We delivered oral closing arguments today & now we wait up to 40 calendar days for the Hearing Officer’s decision. This process is long & exhausting for families. Once school gets out I plan to provide as much of an overview into the process as
I can for families. Many families come to me seeking an out placement and they don’t truly understand the process and what’s required before you even file.

My mom was a special education teacher. She taught what was then described as “remedial” reading. Students would come to her in high school still incapable of reading. While my mom was a miracle worker, there was a lot of traction to cover with the lack of time & resources allotted to her to teach these children, at a minimum, functional literacy. She frequently raised concerns to administrators about the students moving from grade to grade and ultimately graduating who were illiterate. Her voice was never heard. She loved her students with every ounce of her being and yet, as a special educator, she did not have the power to singlehandedly change a system. Her hair was on fire. If only those who had the power to effectuate change also had their hair on fire. Imagine the fire extinguishers you would have needed.

Day 1 of a 3 day BSEA hearing is complete. I think I can confidently say the parents and I are exhausted. When the hearing is over, I’ll definitely provide as much insight as I can without breaching confidentiality. I truly wish the legislature would move to shift the burden of proof to the school district-right now, the burden is on the parents. NH has shifted the burden to the schools and I’d love to believe that creates a more equitable system.
