Western U.P. Chief Science Officers Head to D.C.!

Cassie and Rianna, two of our incredible Western U.P. Chief Science Officers (CSOs), recently traveled to Washington, D.C. for the National STEM Festival! They had the amazing opportunity to advocate for STEM education by meeting with staff from Michigan’s Senate and House offices. Along the way, they learned how powerful student voices can be—and just how important advocacy is in shaping the future of STEM in our communities.

We’re so proud of these young leaders representing the Western U.P. on a national stage!

Michigan Works Conference Recap
Transformation and ignition — exciting words to put together when we talk about our future workforce. That was the focus of the 2024 Annual Conference that took place in Traverse City in September 2024. Michigan MiSTEM Network Region 10 Director Dr. Betsy Diegel attended and had this to say; “Workforce development employees and leaders from Michigan and the Midwest visited the MiSTEM table. ... I enjoyed discussing the MiSTEM pillars, the importance of business/community/education relationships to move STEM forward and networking.”

Michigan Technological University and Northern Michigan University are partnering to prepare middle school science teachers in becoming leaders in STEM education.

I would like to say that our backpack event for this up coming school year was of great success! We were able to supply over 250 children with backpacks and supplies. How awesome is that! But it wouldn't have been possible without the collaboration of KBIC Tribal Social services and KBIC Maternal Health Program.

Now onto our next big event this Thursday (Science Night).

Camp Invention programming by the National Inventors Hall of Fame is underway at the Ironwood Carnegie Library and the Carnegie Museum of the Keweenaw! The last session had students in the role of eco-adventurers. Their mission was to create parachutes from various materials to airdrop animals to a remote island!
