Day 4 — That’s a Wrap on HPS Optional Professional Learning Week! 💙🎉

Our 3rd Annual HPS Optional Professional Learning Week has come to a close! Over four days, educators chose from sessions on positive behavior, place-based learning, math centers, and educator wellness — walking away with new strategies, stronger connections, and renewed energy for the year ahead.

🏙️ Special thanks to Passenger Recovery for hosting our place-based learning session, and to Educators Thriving for continuing their partnership supporting staff well-being.

🌟 A huge shout-out to our Office of Student Achievement coaching staff, who spent the summer planning four days of meaningful PD for their colleagues.

And to every HPS staff member who showed up during their last days of summer to learn and grow — thank you! Your commitment made this week a success.

🎉 Please Join Us in Welcoming Sarah Russo, Our New Assistant Principal at Hamtramck High School! 🎉

Sarah is already a familiar face in HPS. Most recently, she served as School Counselor, AP Coordinator, and Testing Coordinator at Hamtramck High School. In that role, she supported students with academic and graduation planning, social-emotional needs, AP programming, and school-wide assessments. Prior to joining HHS, Sarah served as a Multilingual Teacher at Dickinson West Elementary, giving her experience supporting students and families across multiple grade levels.

Sarah holds master’s degrees in School Counseling and Secondary Education, along with certifications in English, English as a Second Language, and K–12 School Counseling. Her combination of experience in the classroom, counseling, student services, and assessment — as well as her existing relationships within HPS — will be an asset to the Hamtramck High School leadership team.

Day 2 of our 3rd Annual HPS Optional Professional Learning Week focused on two things that matter tremendously — taking care of ourselves and strengthening how we support our multilingual learners!

🌿 Educator Wellness @ Eastern Market gave staff a chance to connect, recharge, and focus on wellness before the school year begins. A huge THANK YOU to Supino Pizzeria for generously opening their space to our HPS educators — community partners like this make experiences like this possible!

🗣️ Asking and Answering Questions (SIOP) gave educators practical strategies for boosting student interaction and academic language for our multilingual learners (MLs). A special shout-out to Dr. Alia Hamka, Principal of Tau Beta, who volunteered her time to lead this ML professional learning. HPS leaders building capacity across the district — exactly what PD should be! Thank you, Dr. Hamka! 👏
