Dear HPS Community,

I am thrilled to announce that two outstanding students from our school district have been selected to serve on the Wayne County Commission Youth Council. Join us in congratulating (pictures are below):

🌟 Noah Gubin

🌟 Priya Roy

Our remarkable students will be representing our school district and city as they participate in this esteemed council, engaging with county officials, community leaders, and other student representatives to make a positive impact in Wayne County.

The Wayne County Commission Youth Council provides a unique platform for young leaders to voice their ideas, contribute to community development, and advocate for youth-related issues. Noah and Priya's participation is a testament to their dedication and commitment to making a difference.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Commissioner Scott for her vested interest in our students at HPS. Her support and encouragement have played a vital role in shaping our students' opportunities for civic engagement.

This evening, I had the pleasure to join their council meeting. The council voted tonight to work on mental health issues. I couldn't be prouder of their accomplishments and look forward to witnessing the positive changes they will undoubtedly bring to our community and county. Please join us in wishing Noah and Priya the best of luck in their new roles!

Stay tuned for updates on their journey with the Wayne County Commission Youth Council.

Best,
Mrs. Ahmed

Dear HPS Community,

I hope this message finds you all safe and well. I am writing to inform you of an important decision regarding the weather conditions expected for tomorrow, Tuesday, January 23rd.

The latest weather forecasts indicate a changeover to rain by mid-to-late Tuesday afternoon. However, there is a possibility that we may experience a prolonged period of wintry mix before this transition. Given these predictions and the potential for hazardous travel conditions, we have decided to prioritize the safety of our students and staff by closing schools for the day.

We understand that school closures can be an inconvenience, and we do not make these decisions lightly. Our primary concern is always the safety and well-being of our school community. We encourage families and staff to stay safe and avoid any unnecessary travel during these adverse weather conditions.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter. Stay warm and safe, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back once conditions improve.

Best,
Mrs. Ahmed

Dear Hamtramck Community,

On Tuesday, November 7th, the City of Hamtramck will cast their votes for the "Capital Improvement Sinking Fund Millage Renewal." This essential initiative will generate the much-needed revenue to improve and preserve our cherished public school buildings.

Our current Sinking Fund expires with the 2023 tax levy. This renewal will enable the District to continue improving our facilities without impacting the current funding for our students’ education.

This renewal comes with good news for our taxpayers. There will be NO INCREASE in taxes with this millage. Instead, taxes will be REDUCED from 4 mills to 3 mills.

The Sinking Fund can be used for the construction, alteration, or repair of school buildings, for school security improvements, for the purchase of real estate, and for technology improvements. However, it cannot be used for staff or administration salaries, wages or benefits, general operating expenses, classroom supplies, books, or routine maintenance.

Better buildings will mean better education and a stronger community. The improvements made to our schools make Hamtramck a more desirable community to live in, boosting all property values. The projects supported by the Sinking Fund will also provide local contractors with an opportunity to bid on millions of dollars in new work, stimulating local economic growth.
Hamtramck Public Schools have been a pillar of the community for over 130 years. Several of our schools are historic treasures, such as the Holbrook Elementary building, constructed in 1896, and Dickinson East, built in 1917. The Sinking Fund millage will contribute to preserving that invaluable history.

Our motto is - STRONG History, Strong Community, Promising Future.

We urge all residents of the City of Hamtramck to participate in this pivotal vote on November 7th. Your support will ensure the continual improvement and preservation of our public school buildings, further enhancing our students' education and our community's strength.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Ahmed

Dear Early Childhood Elementary Staff and Parents,

In times of challenge, we find our greatest opportunities. As we navigate this journey, the words of John F. Kennedy resonate: "In Chinese, the word 'crisis' comprises two characters, one symbolizing danger, the other, opportunity."

Our HPS Community stands on the verge of a remarkable milestone, achieved through unwavering dedication to our beloved ECE Cubs and dedicated staff. The completion of new windows and HVAC at ECE underscores our commitment to our young learners' well-being and education.

This school year began virtually for our ECE Cubs due to ongoing facility improvements. We acknowledge the immense adaptability and effort demonstrated by both our staff and parents in ensuring a smooth virtual start. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for your support. Challenges bring opportunities for growth and resilience. The decision to start our youngest learners virtually was not taken lightly, and we eagerly await their return to our nurturing classrooms. We are thrilled to welcome our ECE Cubs back to school on Monday, October 2nd!

Your support, patience, and understanding mean the world to us. We eagerly anticipate filling our classrooms with the laughter, curiosity, and boundless energy of our incredible students. We extend our deepest appreciation to Mrs. Smith for her exceptional leadership and the ECE staff for their commitment. Mrs. Smith and the ECE staff's dedication to our students inspires us all. Our dedicated custodial team, maintenance team, MLD team, Pupil Service team, and contracted partners equally deserve our gratitude. Together, we create a safe, welcoming, and nurturing environment where our children flourish.

Through challenges and opportunities, together, we'll continue to craft an exceptional learning environment for our Cubs. Please have our ECE Cubs ready for school this Monday!

With sincere gratitude and anticipation,

Jaleelah Hassan Ahmed
Superintendent of Schools

'Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.' - Malcolm X

It is in these moments that every single second that I spend in the field of education is worthwhile. I couldn't be more proud of my former student, Eyad Alshohatee, in his latest appointment at Wayne State University as the Director of Business Affairs at WSU Law School. As a young man, I can recall Eyad being studious, attentive, and so polite. All qualities that make him an exceptional student and successful today. Such an accomplishment and a well-deserved appointment. I am blessed to have served our incredible students and their families for over 25 years and many more years to come. Congratulations!
