Thank you to all of our families for making this such a fun and busy summer! We’re so grateful for all of the learning, progress, and fun we got to be part of. 💛

This summer brought us new and returning students, our first Math Boost lessons, Meredith’s return to the team, and so much more. We learned through books, games, whiteboards, art, and used plenty of creativity along the way!

As a reminder, we’re closed this week, but we’ll be back next week and ready to kick off our school year sessions! If you aren’t on the schedule yet, reach out—we’d be happy to share the spaces we still have available.

Joy Cowles, MAT, is an advanced-level Orton-Gillingham certified teacher who brings a warm and enthusiastic approach to her lessons. Joy also serves as our Program Coordinator, facilitating school and community partnerships and helping us connect with families and organizations in our community.

Joy’s training includes a Master of Arts in Teaching from Tufts University, a Teacher of English as a Second Language license from Gordon College, and an advanced-level Certified Dyslexia Practitioner 2 certification through IMSLEC. She has experience providing literacy intervention to students from pre-kindergarten through high school and enjoys getting to know each student individually and then tailoring instruction to their unique strengths and interests.

Outside of Collier, Joy enjoys experimenting with new recipes, hiking, and spending time outdoors with her family. She is learning to play golf and is enjoying the challenge—and occasional frustration!—of developing this new skill.

Joy is always ready with a smile to dig in with her students, and we are so lucky to have her as a team member!

We believe there is always more to learn. This weekend, Alyssa went down a vocabulary rabbit hole and found a few favorites that are equal parts useful, unusual, and fun to say out loud.

Sometimes the silly sounding words are the ones that stick with us the most.

What's the weirdest real word you know? Share it below—or challenge yourself to use one of these in a sentence this week.

Summer learning doesn’t have to look like worksheets or homework ☀️📚

Some of the best learning moments happen naturally: baking something new, listening to stories outside, exploring nature, trying a different book series, asking questions, creating, playing, and staying curious.

Small moments add up and keeping learning woven into everyday fun can help children maintain confidence and skills all summer long.

At Collier Literacy & Learning, we love helping families find meaningful (and realistic!) ways to keep literacy and learning part of the summer season 💛

Next time you’re in for a session, stop by our lobby art project and decorate a summer bucket with something you’d like to learn, try, or accomplish this summer ☀️

We’d love to hear what’s on your family’s summer bucket list!

We love resources like Meg & Greg from @‌meggregtworead because they help children experience successful reading while still enjoying rich, engaging stories.

What other decodables or beginner books helped engage your struggling reader?
