Shiloh Middle School PTO, Hampstead, MD
Operating as usual
FYI for 8th grade parents. This is a message from a member of the Instrumental Music Executive Board at Westminster High School.
For students headed to WHS in the Fall!
The WHS Instrumental Music Program has been a huge part of all of my boys’ high school experiences! Next year my daughter will finally get to be a part of the program she has supported from auditorium seats, bleachers, BINGO halls, jazz venues and lots of other fun locations! And she is SO excited to be more than a spectator!
If you have an 8th grader headed to WHS next fall to begin their high school career, please keep in mind all the possibilities the Music Program offers! Normally the band director (Mr. Frazier) visits our 8th graders during their 8th grade year to talk to them about the opportunities available to them. Of course this year was different. (Thank you COVID...)
Many students are already signed up for the Orchestra, Band & Percussion classes that are offered in the WHS curriculum. (There is still time to make a change and put this in their schedule if they didn’t already and have decided they want to!). I’m looking forward to seeing them back up on the stage for concerts next year!
In addition to the classes offered during the school day there are at least three (sometimes more) different extra-curricular groups offered.
Jazz Ensemble (sometimes two!): Meets in the afternoon, open to all instruments, has a few performances each year, will start next fall.
Pit Orchestra: Accompanies our spring musical - always an amazing (and fun!) event! Will be organized next winter.
Marching Band: Open to any WHS student, meets for a couple weeks in early August & then twice a week in the evenings during the school year, performs at home football games & area competitions on Saturdays in the fall. Preparations for next years MB start the year before - so this month!
*** If your child even THINKS they MIGHT be interested in Marching Band next fall, there is an open rehearsal (virtual or in person at WHS) on Monday, April 19 from 6-7:30PM followed by a virtual information meeting for parents and students from 8-9PM. There is NO COMMITMENT if they attend and it is a GREAT opportunity for them to come out and see what it is all about!
When my children look back on their high school years I know that their experiences with the music program are and will be some of their best memories. They gained so much more than musical skills! Time management, a sense of belonging to something bigger than themselves, confidence & friendships are just a few of the things they took away from their years with the program!
If you have ANY questions please don’t hesitate to reach out to Mr. Frazier or myself!
Mr. Frazier - [email protected]
Michele Saelens - [email protected]
Reminder: Students who are currently virtual may return to in-person instruction (4 Days a Week) every two weeks. The next available date to switch is Monday, April 12, followed by April 26, May 10, etc. Parents may request to switch students from 4
Days a Week to full virtual at any time. Please email [email protected] to make any changes regarding your child's status.
[04/07/21] 8th grade families: Don't forget to submit a baby picture to Ms. Macurak for the end of year slideshow! Email the photo, along with your child's first and last name, to [email protected].
[01/16/21] Did you know you can clip and submit Box Tops virtually? Use the Box Tops app to scan your store receipt, find participating products and instantly add cash to Shiloh's earnings online. If you discover a traditional Box Tops clip on a product, you can still clip it and send it to school. The funds will be used to support student programs at Shiloh!
We have received the school pictures from Lifetouch. Families who wish to pick them up before the holiday break may do so on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at the following times by grade. Parents will receive pictures of siblings at the same
- 6th Grade 11:00 – 12:00
- 7th Grade 12:30 – 1:30
- 8th Grade 1:30 – 2:30
The distribution will take place at the bus loop in front of the school. As you drive through, please remain in your vehicle at all times and a staff member will distribute the school picture to you. We will also distribute school pictures when students return to hybrid learning, hopefully in early January.
Mask On, Shiloh for the Yearbook!
If students would like to participate, please email Mrs. Macurak at [email protected] with a picture wearing your favorite (school appropriate) face mask for the yearbook. Be sure to include
your first and last name, grade and team in the subject line.
[12/01/20] Congratulations to Mrs. Vogelgesang, 8th grade science teacher! Mrs. Vogelgesang is also a Major in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) and was recently recognized by the Chesapeake Gateway Chamber of Commerce as a Hometown Hero. The Civil Air Patrol is a congressionally chartered, federally supported non-profit corporation that serves as the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force. CAP is a volunteer organization with an aviation-minded membership that includes people from all backgrounds, lifestyles, and occupations. Way to go Mrs. Vogelgesang and thanks for your service to the Civil Air Patrol!
[11/24/20] Don't forget, tomorrow (Wednesday) is an early dismissal as we begin the Thanksgiving holiday!
[11/19/20] Effective tomorrow, Thursday, November 19, Shiloh will return to virtual learning for all students.
[11/18/20] Just a reminder that a vote will be taken at tonight’s Board of Education meeting to decide whether CCPS will continue in hybrid mode or return to all-virtual instruction, which would take effect tomorrow. We will keep you posted on that decision as soon as we have information to share.
[11/15/20] During the month of November, Sources of Strength will be participating in a thankfulness challenge. We are asking students to write thank you notes to staff members of their choice at Shiloh. Students can complete a card during their lunch or at home. Students who are virtual, please email the card/note to Mrs. Griffin @ [email protected] by 11/20. The cards will be sorted and sent on November 23 and 24. Please encourage your child to send a note or two to a staff member of Shiloh!
