12/22 9pm A lot to unpack.

Good evening, multi-hazard weather event on the table for your Friday and some of Saturday. Most of the area has a high wind warning from Dec. 23rd @ 4am to Dec. 24th @ 6am. Winds 30-40mph & gusts possible to 65mph.

Winter weather advisory has also been issued from Dec. 23rd. @ 6am to Dec. 23rd. 6pm. Hazard: 1-3" of blowing snow.

Finally, a windchill warning is in effect Dec. 23rd to Dec. 24th @ 1pm. This is life threatening cold with windchills possible down to -40F. Yes, negative forty degrees possible.

This system coming through will likely dump a quick thump of snow as the artic air arrives. The artic air should arrive by dawn and temperatures will only continue to plummet throughout the day. Air temps are expected to get to -5F without the wind by night time. Hypothermia and frost bite can set in very quickly. Please use caution if going outside & dress adequately for the weather.

Some strong wording from the NWS:
This type of cold is something we rarely see in our area, and
should not be taken lightly. Given the strong winds expected and
this level of cold, it is crucial to make preparations now for
the loss of power in extreme cold conditions and to have a plan
to protect you, your pets, livestock, and other property that
are sensitive to extreme cold conditions.

In addition, items outside that can blow away should be secured NOW. Any inflatable decorations will likely be ruined if not brought or secured better for the weekend.

This will be some of the coldest air that our area has felt in a very long time. When the temp starts to drop, it will only get worse. Please have a plan should the power go out. If you do venture out it is recommended that you make a car kit (blankets, extra clothing, snacks, jumper cables). Make sure all hose bibs are off too.

The map below shows advisories/warnings from the NWS. It does not show each individually due to the multiple items issued by the NWS. You can always go to NOAA to see them or ask questions below.

Above all, stay warm & safe.

Earlier this morning, the Storm Prediction Center of the National Weather Service upgraded northern and central portions of the state to be covered by an enhanced risk (Level 3/5) of severe weather. All other portions of the state, as well as those counties along the Potomac River in Virginia and West Virginia remain in the slight risk (Level 2/5) category. As a result, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for the Maryland counties of Allegany, Garrett, and Washington; the West Virginian counties of Berkeley, Hampshire, Jefferson, Mineral, and Morgan; and the Virginian Counties of Loudoun and Fairfax until 10:00PM. Widespread thunderstorm coverage with wind gusts in excess of 70 MPH are expected. Occasional instances of hailstones in excess of an inch in diameter, as well as a tornado or two, cannot be ruled out.

In addition to the Severe Thunderstorm Watch, the National Weather Service has also issued a Wind Advisory for many portions of the area until 8:00PM. This includes Frederick and Washington Counties in Maryland, Berkeley and Jefferson Counties in West Virginia, and Fairfax and Loudoun Counties in Virginia. Winds of 15 to 25 MPH are expected, with gusts as high as 50 MPH.

Although not at peak strength, some storms are already pushing into the area. From the south, a large batch of thunderstorms is pushing northeastwards into southern Maryland from Virginia, where a Tornado Watch is now in effect. And from the west, the cold fron has just now entered far western Maryland. Check back here for frequent updates on Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings, as this will be significant storm day.
