This was the first year we were a required part of freshmen orientation and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The students had such great energy and enthusiasm, ready to jump in on their career journey. Each students who completes the first 3 tasks (Career Launch + Handshake and H-SConnects Profiles) in our Career Draft earns a limited edition H-SC ball cap. Then on to rounds 2-4. Our final internship feature, with Matthew Teegardin ’29, is appropriately on the day before Fall classes begin. Matthew interned this summer with Low Country Spice Traders in Charleston, SC. From Matthew: “This summer, I had the privilege of interning with Mr. Mitchell Crofts of Low Country Spice Traders. Low Country Spice Traders is a Charleston-based supplier of spices, bases, and other blends to countless restaurants all across coastal South Carolina. Through this experience, I gained a wealth of knowledge, not only about supply chain operations, but also how to manage and operate a small business, client relationships, and sales.

In my internship, I quickly learned that the supply chain business is anything but pretty. Things are constantly going wrong. Whether that is product getting damaged during shipment or restaurants running out of spices during a busy summer weekend, there is always something to be done. This experience helped me understand the chaos behind the scenes in the restaurant industry and also how to operate a business efficiently. You have to be ready to pivot and change plans at all times!

I also gained exposure to the sales side of the business. I learned that sales is not about just moving product, but catering to a client’s needs, building relationships, and providing value. Seeing this process firsthand gave me a greater appreciation for the importance of communication and trust in business.

However, most importantly, I learned the value of hard work, attention to detail, and being willing to take on whatever task was needed of me. Working alongside Mr. Crofts was a great opportunity and I’m very grateful for this opportunity to learn and grow! I’m looking forward to carrying what I learned into my sophomore year at Hampden-Sydney College and future business adventures!”

We sure enjoyed sponsoring Who Will Take The Hill tonight and meeting the Class of ‘30! They scarfed down the Chick Fil A and Lemonade Shark, registered for our Career Draft (career prep challenge), dunked their friends, and of course had an epic tug of war. Cushing was victorious. We look forward to working with these guys for the next 4 years and beyond!

Today we’re featuring Kameron Mahoney ‘28, who interned this summer with the ATF in DC. From Kam: “This summer I had the privilege of working for the Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms, and Explosives in Washington D.C. I worked alongside the HIDTA Task Force under Supervisor Nicco Coia and many other special agents who offered myself and the other interns and incredible experience on what the day to day life was like for a special agent in our nations capital. Throughout the summer I was able to sit on ride alongs, work on leads on online databases, and make a trip to ATF’s gun lab in Martinsburg, WV where they showcase almost every gun imaginable and even some from historical figures and world leaders. I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity, experiences, and memories that ATF gave me this summer, it was one I will never forget!”
