School Board Challenge Question # 8:
What does this candidate have to gain by being on the board?

My response:
As a member of the Hammonton School Board I have been afforded the opportunity to support the most important members of our community - OUR CHILDREN! 💙

Knowing that I have made an impact on our children’s lives is what I have gained! I serve on school board to give back to our community. I don’t need or want a “thank you.” I just need your vote.

Thank you for taking time to read all my responses. I hope to continue to serve our schools and community for the next 3 years and many years to come.

School Board Challenge Question # 7:
Do I trust this person to do their own homework and make thoughtful, well-informed decisions that affect our children? Or will they just vote a certain way because someone of influence told them to?

My response:
As a veteran teacher with 17 years of experience, certified to teach regular education grades K-8, and special education grades K-12, I have vast knowledge related to the field of education. Every day I use my expertise to guide the implementation of educational best practices, positive behavior supports, social emotional learning, and so much more.

While obtaining my Master’s degree in Educational Leadership I learned more about how to advocate for the needs of students, families, and staff. I also gained greater knowledge related to problem solving, data driven research, and how to become a responsive and thoughtful leader.

If I showed up, smiled, nodded, pretended to know what was going on, and just relied on someone else to tell me how to vote, I wouldn’t deserve a place at the table.

Being organized and detail oriented, along with doing my research, taking notes, and asking lots of questions, allows me to be a great school board member. Educational expertise and passion guide me each day to make well-informed decisions for my students and the students of Hammonton School District.

School Board Challenge Question # 6:
Would I feel comfortable approaching this candidate in confidence with a personal issue involving the school to be steered in the right direction? Or would they have my personal business all over town?

My response:
Over the past few years I have spoken to many community members about issues they were dealing with related to their child or the school district. When approached I took the time to listen attentively. After listening, I assisted by either giving advice or supplying contact information so the community member could find a resolution with assistance from the district.

A lot of people in our small town like “being in the know.” However, gossiping about people’s private struggles is never acceptable from a public or school leader. The fact that a parent or student trusts me with their thoughts and feelings is an honor. I have never violated a family’s privacy by telling stories or sharing personal information. I believe that the families I have spoken with have been happy with the information I’ve given them.

School Board Challenge Question # 5:
Is the candidate an intelligent, strong, free-thinking individual who will vote for a board president because of their upstanding reputation and exceptional leadership qualities? Or will they vote for someone to conform and fall in line because it makes their life easier?

My response:
Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you that I’m my own person, I do my research, and ask questions. During my first 3 years on the board I’ve been faced with many difficult decisions but I’ve always done what I thought was best for our community, staff, and students. There were times when I felt compelled to ask questions and cast votes that were unpopular. Was this easy? No. Was it necessary to do what I thought was right? Yes!

My moral compass guides me each day to make decisions that allow me to look myself in the mirror and hold my head high knowing my reputation is intact.

We should all remember that leadership is a privilege that can affect the path of many peoples lives. The residents of Hammonton put their trust and faith in elected officials to act as role models. If re-elected to the Hammonton School Board I vow to continue to make decisions that will make myself, my family and you proud!

School Board Challenge Question # 4:
Who will this candidate support for board president and vice-president? Ask them! Board leadership matters and you deserve that answer as a voter.

My response:
After we get sworn in as board members each January, the absolute first decision we make is to vote for board leadership. Leadership sets the tone for the entire board and district. Kelli Fallon is my first choice for board leadership. She not only received the most votes in the 2020 election, but she is loyal, intelligent, trustworthy, hard-working, and objective. Kelli does not conform or show favoritism. I am confident she will continue to listen to our community, her peers, and make objective decisions for the betterment of Hammonton students.

School Board Challenge Question # 3:
Is this candidate loyal to all Hammontonians? Or do they only answer to a certain political group?

My response:
I am absolutely loyal to all Hammontonians!! Even though I have been told many times that I am NFT (Not From Town) I 100% consider myself a Hammontonian. I don’t let unkind comments that are meant to upset or make me angry change the person I am. My whole life my parents told me I could do anything I set my mind to. It has taken me 40+ years to know they were correct so I am not about to let a little “NFT” comment bring me down or feel less about myself.

I am active in a political party on the county level, but when it comes to the school board, it’s about the kids - not politics or parties! If any Hammontonian, regardless of political beliefs, wants to have a conversation with me and express their concerns, I am always happy to listen with an open mind and heart.

My family and I have been active in town since we moved here over 15 years ago! We give 100% and have been part of several volunteer organizations and appointed to town committees.

If re-elected I will happily do my best to continue to serve and answer to ALL Hammonton families! 💙

School Board Challenge Question # 2:
Does the candidate hold the educators, coaches, staff and employees of Hammonton schools in high regard and treat them with respect? Or do they just want to be in a position to control them?

My response:
I hold Hammonton’s administration, teachers, coaches, and every educational service professional in high regard. My family and I have worked with more than 100 teachers, various members of the district’s Child Study Teams, coaches, and club advisors and I have always treated them respectfully. Ask around! 😀 You will hear I’ve sent emails, asked questions, and talked to them if I had a concern. I have never put a staff member on blast on social media. I have never gone after a staff member by going to administration. When I’ve had concerns about something happening in the classroom or the school I've taken my concern directly to the professional involved so we could work together to find a resolution. Guess what happened when I did that? My concern was addressed and we were able to make things better! 😊

Any board member or candidate that treats educational professionals with disrespect or who supports board leadership that encourages it, allows it, or turns a blind eye to it, is not serving our schools. They’re serving themselves.

Because of Hammonton’s dedicated staff, I’m pleased to say my children are receiving a top-notch education in the Hammonton School District! 💙

I am so moved by Kelli Fallon’s Letter to the Editor in The Hammonton Gazette on October 6th. I feel I should take the time to publicly answer all of her questions. I will be taking the next week and a half to answer each question! 👩‍🏫

Any other candidate that feels compelled to respond please do the same.

Question # 1:
Does the candidate have the best interests of all children of Hammonton as their top priority? Or do they only care about their own or a select few?

My response:
Every student is important to me!! In my almost 2 decades as a teacher I have taught hundreds of students and each one has been “my kid”. Being my kid means I love them unconditionally and do everything in my power to give them the best education. Right now I consider all the children of Hammonton my kids! Their age, race, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, educational strengths and weaknesses does not impact my support for them. EVERY STUDENT deserves the best, least restrictive, most inclusive education possible.
