PNW CIVS students triumphed at AISTech 2023 contests! Congratulations to the CIVS research assistants who won 6 awards: ALL THREE awards in the Graduate Student Poster Contest, one award in the Undergraduate Student Project Presentation Contest, an AIST Foundation Video Contest award, and Material Advantage Student Chapter winner for the AISTech Attendance Challenge! What an achievement! These awards were presented at AISTech 2023 in Detroit:

BIG news! Our ASCE Surveying Team is headed to nationals! They won three awards at the ASCE Indiana-Kentucky Student Symposium: 1st place overall for the ASCE UESI Surveying Competition; 2nd place Field Surveying; 3rd place Topographic Mapping. They head to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville June 10 to compete at nationals!

Computer Science Professor Shuhui Yang has received the 2023 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Grant of Indiana Academy of Science! The DEI grant is to support innovative and impactful projects that further the Academy’s goals of fostering a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive scientific community.
Dr. Yang will be working on the project “Computing Identity Development for Minority and Female Students through Peer Mentoring”. This project aims to increasing diversity in computing, contributing to the development of new theories and models related to identity development in computing fields, and identifying best practices and effective interventions that can be applied in the entire STEM fields and beyond. Congratulations!

There are still a few spots open for our Summer Engineering Camp for high school students! This camp is FREE, by the way! Camp is July 24 to 28. The camp will cover practical engineering topics, including 3D printing, renewable energy, bridge/road designing, virtual reality and electric cars. Students will gain hands-on experience building a basal wood bridge, cardboard wind tunnel and EV go-cart.

Computer Science professor Shuhui Yang received STARS Ignite program stipends to support a cohort of faculty and students from PNW to attend the upcoming 2023 Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in computing and STARS Celebration! Four computer science students will be selected to join Dr. Yang’s cohort and will travel to Dallas in Sept. for both the Tapia Conference and STARS Celebration Workshop.
The NSF-funded STARS Ignite program supports cohorts of students and faculty to attend diversity-focused computing conferences, providing scholarships and activities that promote community & ignite a collective effort towards leveraging diversity, equity, and inclusion. Students in the STARS Ignite program participate in events that provide training and resources to maximize the benefit of attending diversity-focused conferences.

PNW’s NASA Rover Team competed at NASA’s 2023 Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC) at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. More than 500 students from around the world participated during HERC’s 29th anniversary competition. PNW finished 14th in the College/University Division. We are of team members Anthony Latronica, Juan Ruiz, Zachary Holmes (driver), Allan McAlpine, Rebecca Johnson, Makyah Carpenter-Humphrey (driver), and faculty advisor Harvey Abramowitz.
The team wishes to thank the Undergraduate Research Office, the Indiana Space Grant Consortium, John Hruska, and Rick Rickerson for their support.

Congratulations to Kimia Mortezaei and Aref Yadollahi – both have been awarded a grant from the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) to promote innovations and sustainability in engineering education! This grant is supported by the Engineering for One Planet (EOP) initiative, which places a strong emphasis on incorporating sustainability principles into engineering curricula.
