💡 Literacy Lightbulb: Back-to-School Literacy for Middle & High School Families
As students get older, family involvement in literacy may look a little different—but it still matters! Reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking are skills teens use across every subject and throughout everyday life.
Here are a few simple ways to keep literacy part of your family’s routine this school year:
💬 Ask about learning, not just grades. Instead of “How was school?” try asking, “What did you learn today?” or “What challenged you this week?” Conversations like these encourage teens to explain their thinking, reflect, and build communication skills.
📚 Encourage choice reading. Teens are more likely to read when they can choose topics and formats that interest them. Books, magazines, graphic novels, articles, and audiobooks all count!
✏️ Keep writing part of daily life. Encourage your teen to journal, make plans or lists, write reminders, or reflect on their day. Writing doesn’t always have to be an assignment to strengthen literacy skills.
🎯 Make goal setting a family habit. Encourage your teen to choose an academic goal and a personal goal for the school year. Check in on their progress and celebrate their growth and effort along the way.
Literacy matters at every age—and everyday moments at home can help teens continue growing as readers, writers, communicators, and thinkers. 💛
