📚🍎 Learning About Anne Frank Through Reading, Viewing & Discussion📚🍎
Our 7th grade ELA students in Mrs. Dombrowski- Short's class have been building background knowledge about Anne Frank as they prepare to use her writing as a mentor text during their Narrative Writing Unit.
Students began by watching a video to learn important background information about Anne Frank, her life, and the historical context surrounding her story. Afterward, students used a Turn & Talk to discuss their answers and share their thinking with a partner.
Then came their favorite part—they got to become the teacher! Students took turns leading the class through the answers, explaining what they learned, and helping their classmates check their understanding.
Next, they transitioned from viewing and speaking to reading and analyzing. As a class, students read an Anne Frank mentor text aloud and worked together to identify the different elements of narrative writing and how those elements help an author communicate an experience to the reader. 📖✏️
Through one lesson, students practiced analyzing main ideas and supporting details across different media and formats, explaining how information helps clarify a topic, collaborating with peers, speaking and listening, and analyzing the techniques authors use in narrative writing! 🦂📚💙🧡
