Movie lovers in downtown Hammond are in for a classic cinema experience as the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts hosts a special 40th anniversary screening of "Top Gun."

Attendees can kick off the evening at 7:30 p.m. on August 29 with behind-the-scenes insights from resident film historian Jason Landrum, plus free popcorn and themed swag bags included with ticket purchase. It is a fantastic opportunity for our campus community and neighbors to gather and celebrate a defining piece of pop culture history right in the heart of Hammond.

Southeastern political science instructor Bridget Hester has been honored with the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, recognizing her dedication to preparing students to become informed citizens and thoughtful leaders.

Since joining the university in 2017, Hester has emphasized media literacy, source evaluation, and critical thinking in her courses. Beyond the classroom, she connects pre-law students with hands-on internships across local district attorney offices and law firms, opening doors for real-world career opportunities before graduation.

Southeastern is bringing history to life with the new HIPS Military Museum, opening Aug. 26 in Fayard Hall.

Curated by the Department of History and Political Science, the museum features more than 1,000 artifacts, giving students hands-on learning opportunities and visitors a closer look at military history.

The museum is free and open to the public Monday through Thursday, with its opening exhibit marking the 80th anniversary of the Nuremberg Trials.

Southeastern Louisiana University will open a new military history museum Wednesday, Aug. 26, called the HIPS Military Museum. “HIPS” is the acronym for the Department of History and Political Science, which curates the collections.
