People often ask about the tools we used for relocations, in this video I show our awesome handmade hook made by my buddy Jordan and also the best snake SAFE grabbers out there from AE stoney.
Killing a native snake is NEVER the only option, it's time to shift the mindset from "kill!" to "leave it alone!"

Beauty Snake rescue is eating!! (Edit: it ate 2 mice!)I'm sure he/she can eat a bigger sized mouse but it's so malnourished I didn't want it to have to use alot of energy to swallow.
Fingers 🤞 this is the beginning of a long road to recovery.

Coiling up is what a snake does when it's SCARED, it's not "standing its ground." The key is to be willing to re-learn that snakes are DEFENSIVE, not aggressive.
Unlike dogs, snakes will never seek a person out to attack them, bites are self defense only. Imagine a dog sitting down and never moving as you are able navigate anywhere you want to go as long as you don't step on top of the dog. Would you categorize that dog as behaving aggressively? Of course not! Why is it suddenly aggressive if a snake that's physically too slow to flee curls up and doesn't move?
If you think you were chased, it's because you misinterpreted behavior. Use basic logic, is it more likely the snake is coming to see if I had food or maybe I was in between the snake and its safe place OR was the snake on a su***de mission to die at the hands of its largest and deadliest predator? Obviously the snake wasn't trying to "catch" its largest predator.

Copperheads DO NOT smell like cucumbers.
Baby snakes are NOT more dangerous than adults.
These copperheads were born in a sealed container during a relocation, not a hint of cucumbers. Snakes musk when scared, but even interacting with me didn't cause a single one to musk.
Copperheads are ambush predators that rely heavily on their camouflage, they absolutely do not musk just because someone is in the area. Snakes don't have a natural odor either or they would never be able to ambush prey.

10,000 followers!! Guys we are blown away because we got hacked last year and dropped from 55k followers down to 114 total. We were devastated but decided not to quit and rather come back even better than before. We aren't there yet but with YOUR help we will keep growing which will allow us to teach more people about snakes in hope of them not killing snakes anymore.
THANK YOU!!

ANSWER TIME!!! This one tricked quite a few people and that's why I thought it would be a great teaching quiz. It's actually a harmless western ratsnake (Pantherophis obsoletus)!
One of the most common myths (and you can see it coming through in the guesses) is that venomous snakes swim fully on top of the water and nonvenomous snakes swim partially or fully submerged. This photo debunks that myth right there. Both venomous and nonvenomous snakes can and do swim fully on top of the water or partially/fully submerged as they chose. The myth often implies that venomous snakes have specialized lungs and it's simply not true. Venomous cottonmouth water moccasins eat FISH as the main part of their diet so obviously they need to be able to swim and bite fully underwater.
How can we tell this is a ratsnake and not a diamondback watersnake that many people guessed? The saddles on the back of a ratsnake are solid black, whereas on a diamondback watersnake they are more like a chain-link fence so the big parts are hollow. I've included a collage that shows the original photo, a photo of my ratsnake Andy on my head and a diamondback watersnake to show a side by side.
Since the top 2 guesses were cottonmouth and diamondback watersnake, I've also included a collage of a ratsnake, a cottonmouth and a diamondback watersnake so you can see all 3 together.

QUIZ TIME!!! What do we have here??
Explain WHY with your guess so we can learn what we need to teach more.
Don't remember the exact state this photo came from but an ID can be made.
Answer will be posted tomorrow, be sure to follow Louisiana Snake ID
