The Joy of Giving…
The joy of receiving a meaningful gift can leave a lasting impact on our lives.
What was your best Christmas gift ever? I remember mine like yesterday. I was a struggling new mom, barely able to make ends meat. Attending my cousin's wedding in Chicago seemed like an impossible dream, given my financial constraints, responsibilities, and job. Emotions didn't come naturally to me, and my family often found it challenging to surprise me with gifts that would evoke excitement. However, one gift shattered that notion and brought tears of joy, screams of excitement, and leaps of happiness. It was a gesture that I never saw coming. My father presented me with a plane ticket and hotel stay for my cousin's wedding – a thoughtful and unexpected gift that touched my heart deeply. The sheer idea of attending had never crossed my mind.
Reflecting back on those days, I realize now that survival had become my sole focus. But it shouldn't have been that way. I should have been eagerly planning to be present at my cousin's wedding, celebrating love and family. Today, armed with the knowledge and experience I have gained, I understand the true value of gifts that go beyond material possessions. Gifts of knowledge, mindset, drive, and leadership are the ones I strive to impart to my children daily. While my parents did their best, offering material things did not contribute significantly to my future.
One of the most incredible gifts I have received is the second chance to raise exceptional children. Along the journey between my first child and my second, spanning over 11 years, I was bestowed with the gift of leadership, knowledge, and a positive mindset. I comprehend now that passing on these gifts to my children holds far greater importance than any material possession ever could. When we empower our children with a growth mindset, equip them with knowledge, and foster their leadership skills, the returns are immeasurable. Today, my greatest treasures are witnessing my kids being acknowledged by their teachers, bosses, and coaches for their leadership roles. When they are recognized for doing the right thing, for leading by example, and for excellence even in the absence of an audience, it reaffirms that the gift keeps on giving.
As for my eldest child, all hope is not lost. It may be more challenging to be an example of change for an adult, but it is possible. Even though he has reached adulthood, I can still lead by example rather than authority, just as I do with my younger children. It requires a more intentional effort, but when adult children finally grasp the value of leadership and knowledge, it becomes an immensely rewarding experience beyond imagination. Unlike younger children, adult children don't simply take our word for it; they need to witness the principles in action from both parents and other successful adults. Multiple sources of confirmation become essential.
Receiving a gift that transcends material possessions can transform our lives. This experience can shape perspective, leading to recognize the true value of gifts: knowledge, mindset, drive, and leadership. While it may be more challenging to instill change in adult children, leading by example and exposing them to successful role models can still inspire transformation. Ultimately, the most precious gifts are those that keep on giving, empowering future generations with the tools they need to thrive. Have a Merry Christmas and remember the most important gift you can give is a good example of Leadership and positive mindset. Proverbs 22:6 - Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Parents, we have a job to do. Our children need Leadership. Give that gift to your children. The cost is minimal and the gain is unmeasurable.
