In an effort to embrace and welcome the members of our church with sensory processing issues, a monthly Sensory-Friendly Mass will be celebrated at St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Hammond at 2 pm on the second Sunday of the month, beginning Sept. 13. This Mass will feature lower lighting, scripture from the Children’s Lectionary, shorter and more literal homilies, and no music or incense. Designed to foster a comfortable setting for children and adults with sensory challenges or any kind of disability to feel engaged and experience Mass in a meaningful way with family and caregivers, this Mass may also be beneficial for those on the Autism spectrum, adults with dementia and Alzheimer’s or anyone struggling with overstimulation and sensory overload. Families are encouraged to bring materials that can assist with comfort during the liturgy, such as noise cancelling headphones, wiggle seats, sunglasses, fidget cubes, etc.

Our students cooled off with some delicious freeze pops and had a great time playing icebreaker games with their classmates last Friday! 💙 Lots of smiles, laughter, and new friendships made for a fun Friday at St. John Bosco! 🍧🎉

Part of our Cafeteria renovations included paying homage to our patron saint, but also honoring the legacy of those Catholic schools in Hammond who have fed into St. John Bosco Catholic School over the years. Flanking images of St. John Bosco with the children of Italy and modern America are icons of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Hessville), St. Catherine of Siena (Hessville), St. Joseph (Downtown) and St. Mary of Czestochowa (East Hammond).
