Program Description

When you enroll in the associate degree program for Human Services Technology, you will take courses from a variety of disciplines. Emphasis is placed on core courses such as development of relevant knowledge, skills and attitudes in human services. You will gain hands-on experience in the field and will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills you learned in the

classroom. Completion of the program will qualify you for positions in mental health, child care, family services, social services, rehabilitation, correction and educational agencies. The answer is YES if you:

Have a strong desire to help others. Show patience, understanding and caring in dealings with others. Have effective communication skills, a strong sense of responsibility, and an ability to manage time effectively.

We have established a student support and prevention program that helps students understand addiction, make informed choices and connect with help when needed. Clear Path, which stands for Campus Learning, Education, Awareness & Responsibility, is an anti-addiction program that encompasses more than just substance abuse. It is for all addictions such as gambling, social media, gaming, or anything that can become all consuming. This is not a punitive program. These are lesson-based meetings that cover the psychological and physiological processes of addiction and how to make healthy choices. We’re proud to share that Samaritan Colony has officially received its state license from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services for the SECU Women’s Recovery Center.

The 14-bed facility, completed in summer 2025, will begin admitting women for substance use disorder treatment on February 1, 2026. This license confirms the center meets all state standards for safety, staffing, and clinical care.

“I am proud of the staff for their dedication in bringing the SECU Women’s Recovery Center from vision to reality,” said Board Chair Clint Ray. “We also extend deep gratitude to our donors and community partners. This milestone would not have been possible without their support.”

Executive Director Mark Christopher emphasized that the center is about more than treatment—it’s about transformation.

“This will be a place where women reflect on who they were, choose who they no longer want to be, and begin the work of becoming who they are meant to be,” Christopher said. “Through commitment, accountability, and community, they will grow—discovering the power of being useful to others. That sense of purpose is what sustains recovery.”

Founded in 1975, Samaritan Colony has served men and families impacted by addiction for over 50 years. The SECU Women’s Recovery Center marks an important expansion of our mission—bringing structured, evidence-based care to women in a safe, supportive environment.
