Meet Coach J! 🐾🧡

We are excited to welcome Justin Sowles—better known as “Coach J”—to the Bobcat family! Mr. Sowles will be teaching AP Literature/Lang, English 10, Film Literature, Creative Writing, and Student Media.

A Purdue graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in Education from Western Governors University, Mr. Sowles brings a passion for education and a genuine love for his students to Oregon-Davis.

When he’s not in the classroom, you can find Mr. Sowles swimming, traveling, playing video games, watching the Indianapolis Colts, spending time with his three kids, or playing with his dog. Some of his favorite include lasagna, Mt. Dew Baja Blast, Five Guys, Longhorn Steakhouse, Orange and Colts Blue, Scythe, Iron Man, and The Big Bang Theory, He is also a licensed pastor and attends the Mennonite Church in Kouts. He is a proud dad to Jaxon (17), Xander (14), and Trinity (13), who he describes as his world and his reason for being here.

When asked why he chose to be part of the Bobcat family, Mr. Sowles said:
“I chose to be a part of the Bobcat family because it is just that, a family. I love that this school is so small and I have gotten the opportunity to get to know all of the students. I love every student that has walked through my door as if they were my own. My coworkers are all so wonderful. I am truly so happy to be a part of a group that really is close knit just like a family. It makes me very excited to come to work everyday.”

We are excited to have Mr. Sowles here and look forward to the impact he will make in our classrooms and throughout our school community!

Mrs. Noland's Class played a fun game of musical chairs with a little twist! 🎶🪑 When the music stopped, instead of just finding a seat, each friend had to tell Mrs. Noland the number on their chair. The preschoolers practiced recognizing their numbers while having SO much fun! The kids absolutely loved it! 💕🔢🎉

AP Psychology students in Mrs. Gillard’s room were busy designing, creating, building, and PLAYING their cumulative vocabulary assessment games!

Instead of a traditional test, students were challenged to take everything they have learned so far and turn it into a game. They had to know the vocabulary well enough to write questions, create rules, explain concepts, and then challenge their classmates.

There was a lot of thinking, talking, laughing, debating, and learning happening around the room. They weren’t just memorizing vocabulary for a test. They were using it, explaining it, and making connections.

The goal is to build a solid framework now that we can continue adding to throughout the rest of the year.

Sometimes assessment looks like a pencil and paper. Sometimes it looks like a room full of kids playing games they created themselves. And we LOVE it
