I am learning about accents and dialects in my English Language class. It is fascinating how a person from the Southern part of the United States sounds different from a person that lives in Boston or New York.

When reading books about linguistics when I was in high school I remember the author, Mario Pei (who was a Professor at Columbia University the year the book was published) said that slang is a very important feature of any language:

"While slang may be condemned by purists and schoolteachers, it should be remembered that it is a monument to the language's force of growth by creative innovation, a living example of the democratic, normally anonymous process of language change, and the chief means whereby all the languages spoken today have evolved from earlier tongues."

I have met many people (non-native speakers) who struggle to speak and understand English. According to them it is because a lot of English speakers speak really fast. I talked to a man who is originally from Jordan today, when I was out browsing for items that I needed to buy for my home.

He needed help buying an item that he wanted to make sure was the right one because of the fact that English was not his first language. I spoke slowly to him and made sure that he understood what I was saying to him. Good techniques to use for this type of communication are body gestures or hand signals because when I did that he understood what I was trying to say to him.
