South River completed their final day with a full scale water supply exercise. We achieved approximately 3,000 gpm at the height of the incident. We utilized two water supply drop points with a total of four drop tanks. Three dynamic fill sites supplemented! Thank you to all the mutual aid that came and had fun with us. Great team work!

Thursday, July 24, 2026- SOUTH RIVER, NJ

Last night, firefighters from South River, North Brunswick, and East Brunswick completed the hands-on night of “Building the Water Supply Infrastructure”. Students became fluent in manifolds & hitches, dump tanks, transferring multiple dumps tanks, building dynamic fill-sites, and advanced drafting techniques.

This SUNDAY morning is their final big FULL SCALE WATER SUPPLY EXERCISE!! Goal flow is 3000-4000 gpm. See you all Sunday!!!

Final Training Day/Night - 3 of 3 for JCK Academy’s - “Advanced Pump & Alternative Water Supply Operations” in Monroe Township - Station 51.

The final night concentrated on:
- Heavy Water Hookups
- Hydrant Assist / Humat boosting appliances
- Manifolds and Water Thiefs
- FDC / Stand pipe Ops
- Dual Pumping
- Basic Foam Eductor Ops
- Pump panel gating
- Ladder Pipes / wagon pipes
- Utilizing master stream tip sizes

A great time and great opportunity to work with a new rigs spec’d for success !

Final Training Day/Night - 3 of 3 for JCK Academy’s - “Advanced Pump & Alternative Water Supply Operations” in Monroe Township - Station 51.

Many of you have in-boxed inquiring some more information about the class and had a few questions. First- All engines are E-One. One engine is a 1998 E-One, 2000 gpm / 1000 gallon engine. The new engine is a 2026 E-One 2250 gpm / 1000 gallon engine. The new engine has two 3” Tank to Pumps, which puts the engine’s ability to pump beyond the NFPA 1901 - 500 gpm, in addition to various other reasons like topography. This engine’s specs puts them in a position to win!

Reiterating - We teach A way, Not THE WAY. I am not a fan of the Humat or Hydrant Assist Valves unless time is a factor. If the 1st Due and 2nd Due Engines are arriving in close proximity, I would rather have an engine pick up a feed or back down and lay out to the water source; however, when time is a factor, I ABSOLUTELY love these types of appliances (especially the new TFT OASIS valve) (no I don’t work for TFT). This is not a debate… Just an opinion.

In this exercise, the attack engine layed out to the simulated fire and received water from the hydrant. The 2nd due source engine picked up a feed at a hydrant that was hooked up to an older hydrant assist valve (25 years old - old faithful). The hydrant is a green cap rated between 1000 gpm - 1500 gpm . The length between engines were approximately 550ft.

The source engine hooked into the Hydrant Assist Valve and took additional feeds from the two 2.5 side ports (one being a 2.5 to 5” feed, the other being a 3” feed due to a lack of pony lengths).

Students were able to identify a massive influx of water volume when boosting and sourcing more water from the hydrant using a heavy water hookup technique. Nearly 600 gpm more water was achieved. Listen to the RPM in the video. Look at the attack engine’s gauges as the source engine boosted pressure. The source engine took additional feeds and literally saturated its pump to boost more pressure.

Great job by the students, as they stretch and exercise their new engine’s capabilities !!

Again, it’s A way, not THE way. Have fun, train, and ultimately find out by getting out there and doing it!

Students were challenged through 3 days of classroom and hands-on exercises, including but not limited to the fundamentals of vehicle anatomy, modern vehicle metals, EV vehicles, working through challenges like twisted and overturned vehicles, lifting and stabilizing, patient disbandment, airbags, and various advanced extrication techniques.

Day 2 of 3 for JCK Academy’s - “Advanced Pump & Alternative Water Supply Operations”.

Although not a fan of front suction drafting (and you will here it from me all the time), we challenged the students with using the front suction today with mechanical failure pumping and not touching a primer. Well done job!!!

Advanced Pump & Alternative Water Supply Operations in Monroe Township Fire District #1 - Station 51.

Today Monroe Station 51 completed Day 2 of 3 for JCK Academy’s - “Advanced Pump & Alternative Water Supply Operations”.

Thursday Night, June 25 began with a in class power point, focusing on:
- Friction Loss Calculations
- Needed Fire Flow formulas
- Building the Pipeline - Relay Pumping
- Heavy Water Hookups
- Hydrant Cascading and “the why”
- Appliance and outside the box methods
- Pumping long lines and feeder lines
- Dual Pumping
- PSI vs RPM mode, pressure governors

Today’s class, Sunday, June 28, started with classroom, reviewing:
- Mid-rise High-rise, FDC/ Standpipe pumping
- Basic Foam Ops
- Nozzle tip sizes and Water Supply Vs. Demand
- Manifolds and Water Thiefs
- Drafting single tube and double tube
- Mechanical Failure drafting, without a primer

Students then went hands on and sourced a hydrant, subsequently pumping a relay of 400’ of 5” LDH with a short length of 3” to simulate a longer relay. We maximized the hydrants volume and sourced water to an attack engine, in addition to conducting “dual pumping” into an old retired 1983 engine using a manifold - intake into intake, into intake!! (Yes that’s correct)

We then put a drop tank down and put it in-service, conducting double drafts source feeds to maximize our pipeline!’ Great times!!

Looking forward to the final night on Tuesday!!!
We will revisit many of the tactics that we conducted today, in addition to basic foam operations, feeding FDC’s & standpipes, and maximizing 5” into a pipeline.
