Hamden Adult Education Embreca Educantion as a lifelong Experience Also at this time, American citizenship classes were offered.

In 1927, the Hamden Board of Education established adult education classes for the purpose of helping new immigrants in our community acquire English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. After World War II, the GED (General Education Development) program was instituted for returning veterans to assist them in obtaining a high school equivalency diploma in order to jump start their assimilation back into the workforce or into college. In 1969, the Hamden Adult High School, a credit diploma program, was instituted to educate any individual 16 years of age and over who had withdrawn from school but wanted a second chance to earn a high school diploma. Since its inception, more than 1600 students have graduated in this program. In 1980, in order to meet the needs of a changing society and the varied schedules of our adult population, the External Diploma Program was added. Individuals who could not meet on a regular basis in the evening now had a third route to obtain a high school diploma. Over 500 adults have chosen this route to earn a diploma. Hamden Adult Education has expanded over the years to incorporate basic skills training, computer literacy and enrichment activities. Two area school systems, North Haven and Region #5 - Amity, have joined with us to provide services to their residents. On average, over 3000 adults participate in our programs each year. The mission of Hamden Adult Education is to develop well-educated citizens who embrace education as a lifelong experience.
