Consumer Confidence Report for 2020 11/05/2020

Consumer confidence fell to its lowest point in at least six years across the Visegrád Four and Romania. This directly corresponds to the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting massive drop off in GDP growth. Eurostat’s consumer confidence index includes information about general economic and financial conditions as well as trends in prices, unemployment, and savings.

CEE Stock Market Report for October 5 – October 16 10/20/2020

A strong couple of weeks for the US S&P has it back about three percent above its pre-outbreak level and close to its highpoint around the end of August. The Slovakian SAX was mostly flat and is now about two and a half percent below where it was in mid-February. The Romanian BET is now down about thirteen percent after being as close as seven percent below its pre-outbreak level only a few weeks ago. The Hungarian BUX is down over twenty five percent. The Czech PX, Polish WIG 20, and UK FTSE are very tightly grouped, all down just over twenty percent.

CEE Exchange Rate Report for September 7 – September 18 09/24/2020

All CEE currencies besides the Czech koruna have seen a change of less than half a percent relative to the Euro over the past two weeks. Furthermore, all CEE currencies experienced a loss in value relative to the Euro. The Hungarian forint, Polish zloty, and Romanian leu depreciated around a quarter of a percent or less. Notably, the Czech koruna saw the greatest change, with a relatively steep decline of around 1%.

Poland’s Economy Encounters Improvement in Industrial Industry 09/21/2020

Poland's recent Central Statistical Office (GUS) report indicated the country’s industrial production rose 1.5 percent in August compared with the same month the year prior. According to Poland's PAP news agency, analysts initially predicted an increase of 1.8 percent due to the economy’s emergence from the COVID-19 disruption. Either way, that growth is in stark contrast to the 5.8 percent decline in industrial production from July to August of this year.
