IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR FLORIDA ELECTROLOGISTS: LASER TATTOO REMOVAL

We often receive questions from licensed electrologists regarding whether they may legally perform laser tattoo removal under the supervision or delegation of a Florida-licensed physician.
Based on a legal review of current Florida statutes and administrative rules, the answer is no.
Under Florida law, the scope of practice for a licensed electrologist is specifically limited to permanent hair removal. Florida Statute Β§ 478.42 defines electrolysis and electrology as the permanent removal of hair, and Florida Administrative Code Rule 64B8-56.002 limits the use of laser and light-based devices by electrologists to devices cleared by the FDA for hair removal or reduction.
Therefore, laser tattoo removal falls outside the defined scope of an electrologist license in Florida.
Importantly, working under the delegation, supervision, or medical direction of a physician does not automatically expand a practitionerβs legal scope of practice.
Florida Statute Β§ 456.072 also provides grounds for disciplinary action when a licensed healthcare professional practices beyond the scope permitted by law. The same statute places limitations on physicians delegating procedures to individuals who are not properly qualified or legally authorized to perform them.
For this reason, physician supervision β including supervision through telehealth β does not by itself authorize a Florida licensed electrologist to perform laser tattoo removal.
