It is rare here in Hawaii to see green sea turtles interacting with Galapagos and sandbar sharks. This Honu is floating a few miles offshore at aggregate site. Sharks are extremely curious animals and intrigued by the surface activity that the Honu is creating. You can see the sharks coming in closer to check out the Honu as a point of interest but leave it alone once they realize what it is. 🐢💙🦈

The yellow tang (Zebrasoma flavescens) and sea turtles are a perfect example of the symbiotic relationship known as . This means both of the organisms involved benefit from the relationship. The yellow tang's diet consists largely of algae which can be found on the shells of the turtles. While the yellow tang fish are able to get their meals from cleaning the shell, the sea turtles benefit from gaining a smoother shell which reduces friction in the water, increasing efficiency. The spots where groups of these fish can be found cleaning sea turtles are called “cleaning stations.” Yellow tang fish at the cleaning stations will also feed on external parasites on the turtle also making it beneficial for the turtle's overall health (Brown, S., 2014). On our Little Ocean Tour one of our locations is a cleaning station where Yellow tang can be seen cleaning the shells of Honu.

Sea turtles are unique in that they have a “global positioning system” (Luschi, P. et al 2007). This internal system is similar to a compass that helps them navigate through unfamiliar places. This compass allows sea turtles to maintain their preferred direction while also knowing their location in regard to their destination. The green sea turtle uses an internal map based partially on geomagnetic cues. These cues are used during natal homing when sea turtles navigate long journeys to reach their nesting beach. 📸 photo by of a Honu squad 😉

Meet Koko! One of our female green sea turtles here on the North Shore! She is an adult female and a rather large individual! We see her almost every week and it is wonderful to be able to share the water with her. She is identified by a crater like hole in the center of her carapace. When seen in person the hole is rather deep and is actually the larger one of many marks. It is possible she my have been hit by a boat prop at one point in her life. But overall she is a healthy and thriving sea turtle! with and

We are extremely lucky to have as a sponsor/affiliate of ! When you come out with us you get to use their amazing fins which are perfect for our shallow snorkels and also comfortable and powerful! Thank you for supporting our research that focuses on ID database of sea turtles and Fibropapillomatosis. As you can see in this video this Honu has a rather large tumor underneath its right front pectoral. This virus can be extremely debilitating but good news is we have added this Honu into our local database and will be able to monitor the growth or hopefully natural rehabilitation of this one!

Photo by of a newly identified sea turtle that was found with fishing line wrapped around its front pectoral flippers and head. Thanks to the great samaritans who watched the turtle until we could arrive to help! Great news the sea turtle was freed of fishing line but sad news is this female is struggling with Fibropapillomatosis. Learn how you can help protect sea turtles and join us in the water!

Basking is reported among green sea turtles and only in certain locations. Hawaii is one of the few places in the world that humans can see green sea turtles hauled up on the sand resting (Whittow & Balazs 1982). Basking on land is most prevalent among female sea turtles and is most commonly in relation to cooler temperature waters (Spotila et. al 1997; Houtan et. al 2015). But despite the use of solar radiation to help increase body heat, scientists have found that green sea turtles exhibit some regional endothermy (Standora 1982). This means green sea turtles can hold and regulate some of their heat internally.
