OK- As promised I will use this space to explain how I'm using one of my classroom management gamification skins.

I began by making a specific copy. I have deleted the red slides, and I have changed my RAC mechanic into a Quizizz. I like how Quizizz can track performance, and semes inherently open to many of my gamification needs.

I am using this game for 7th grade because I will teach all the 7th grade classes so I can get it started day 1.
I like that this game promotes ART, and will allow me to add additional import and opportunity to develop language skills in my science class.

So, the new plan.
I will be teaching FULL time for the 23-24 school year.
I plan to use the classroom management game skins I designed as Gamification Schoolhouse in the management of my new middle school science classrooms.

I will post the game, any adaptations, stories, and outcomes here.

Hello world

First an apology. Gamification Schoolhouse is still a thing. It is however a 1 man show and the last 4 months have been intense. No need to share the sad details but I am back.

A day before the passing of my Dad someone reached out to me here. Please do so again. The short version of this post is that I am back, and ready to help.

More will be posted later but the dates are the weekends of June 12/13 & June 26/27.

These will be small, PLC sized offerings. This could be a easy way to find your way into gamification.

I sometimes forget about Facebook. Sorry. I will try to do better. For those of you who follow me here and not Twitter (God help my soul ) I want to push an idea at a very important "NOW" for all of us and our nation/planet.

Did you know that "Disease"; its causes, transmission, treatment, and ways individuals/communities can effect all of these is not normally taught in US schools. At least not in science classes. NO US science standards (especially in ES & MS) that I am aware of teach it as a specific topic. Although some individual general standards can be tortured to support teaching some parts of disease, I know from experience it was hard to justify why I was teaching disease in my science class if it was not in the science standards.

The link was designed for an entire unit on the topic of disease during/after the last Ebola scare. Even this version was created before COVID. I am already tinkering with a mask slide/game component idea, and I am open to comments on this addition if you have the time.

More importantly, it can be used in schools and classes NOW, as some students and teachers are returning to in presence classes to incentivize and contextualize mask wearing now and the science behind it in a cause we can all get behind: preventing and surviving a Zombie Apocalypse.

Again, please do share this, it could help us improve the now for allot of kids who need it. Note the "Survivors Path" mechanic. Each student kept a fictional "Survivors Journal" in their science notebook. A little creative writing in my science class. In a fictional narrative space, students could also be asked to open up and reflect on COVID events that are not near as bad as a Zombie Apocalypse, but still difficult to discuss.

Rather than avoid the comparison to a Zombie Apocalypse embrace the fact that this IS a disease situation in which we can still make choices that shorten the impacts of COVID. It IS NOT a zombie apocalypse, so lets all do what we need to do to end it... and have fun. I got the idea for all of this as a teacher visiting the CDC web site.

Also it is Gamification Schoolhouses 1 year anniversary!!!
COVID made starting an in-person PD business problematic.

However, relief is on the horizon.

If you are reading this PLEASE pass on this link, to any educator who wants to add gamification and deliberate game play to their school/practice.

Teachers send it to your principals/superintendents now as they start to think about next year.

I read this and I was (am) that kid. You never stop being that kid, but you adapt as you can. I do wonder how gamification can help and if anyone knows of a conversation I can be part of, please let me know.

About a year ago, Gamification School house came into existence. The big unveiling would be at the 21st Century Learning conference in Hong Kong last March. The conference was postponed but it will finally happen this January... virtually. Which means (oh man) no Disney. So bittersweet. 🧐
