Today at the New Jersey State Chiefs of Police Association meeting we recognized the 25th anniversary of John’s Law and the HERO campaign.
John’s Law in New Jersey mandates that police impound the vehicle of anyone arrested for driving under the influence (DUI/DWI) for at least 12 hours. Named after a Navy Ensign killed by a released drunk driver, it aims to prevent repeat drunk driving immediately following an arrest.
The mission of the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign is to prevent drunk driving tragedies by promoting the use of safe and sober designated drivers. It was founded by the family of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott of Egg Harbor Township, who was killed in a head-on collision with a drunk driver just two months after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy.
