This morning, a crane was used on the new Wrestling Building in order to install the heat and air conditioning units. The use of the crane required Agriculture Education classes to be relocated for a short time as the crane was over that building. All of the brick facade and most of the other wall coverings for the exterior have been completed. Work on the inside is continuing with sheetrock prep in advance of installing wall tile and painting.

This project is still on schedule for a mid-October opening.

Contractors and GPS staff worked through the night to get the High School up and running with a temporary chiller. The finishing touches were completed around 1:30 a.m. today and the system ran all night so the building could be comfortable for classes today. A special thanks to the many people who made this happen.

Crews are currently working on installing the temporary chiller at Guthrie High School. Plans are underway once installation is completed for the system to run all night so the building can be comfortable for classes tomorrow. If anything changes, we will notify families of high school students by Parent Square. Plan for school to begin at the normal time.

Guthrie High School Classes Cancelled Tomorrow

Due to a faulty chiller affecting air conditioning in over half of Guthrie High School, classes will be cancelled on Tuesday, August 18th. Since virtual days are no longer possible, the necessity of making up this day will be determined later in the school year.

The high school is the only building affected. All other GPS students as well as those who attend Meridian Technology Center and Faver Alternative School will have classes at the normally scheduled times. GHS staff will report for work and relocate to the portions of the building with air conditioning.

GPS School Year Off and Running

Classes at Guthrie Public Schools started for the 2026-27 school year this morning. The High School had a planned late start to accommodate the Senior drive. The district administrators toured each building this morning visiting with students and staff.

According to Dr. Mike Simpson, Superintendent of Schools, “It is always fun on the first day to see the gleam in the eyes of the elementary students and to also see how many of the high school and junior high students still look sleepy after 10:00 a.m. The touching times are when the pre-K students become comfortable with their first school experience. Overall, the start appeared very smooth. The parking lot changes at the High School seemed to run very smooth. Given time, everyone will become more comfortable with the new process.”

Here are the latest pictures from progress on the wrestling building. Most of the exterior brick is complete and the EIFS for the remainder of the exterior walls has begun. Inside the building, most of the walls are complete along with the ductwork for the heating and air conditioning systems.

This project is still on schedule for a mid-October completion.
